Decent Story. Terrible Presentation.

I think that the story was pretty interesting, but the narration was so bad that I found it hard to pay attention to. It was very mechanical and at times sounded like it was being narrated by a 1990’s computer.

Great start to a new series

This novella begins the Thomas Caine suspense thriller series. Caine is a former CIA agent who is on the run. The series has real promise. Book 1, Tokyo Black, has been released in Kindle format but is not yet available in audiobook format. This novella is set in Thialand where Caine is running a small time smuggling operation (no drugs and no girls).

Right up there with Crais and Child

Would you consider the audio edition of Devil's Due to be better than the print version?

I preferred the print version of this story, primarily because the narrator did not sound like I imagined Thomas Caine. However, the story in any format will keep readers engaged!

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Finished this book in one sitting and moved on to the next book in the series. Very well written with stellar "thriller" elements - a complex hero, action, danger, excitement, and twists and turns I never saw coming.

Did Bryan L. Anderson do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

The narrator's style seemed more like that of narrator vs. taking on the personas of the different characters. His gritty, bass-timbre voice suited the genre, but he didn't bring Thomas Caine to life.

Narration destroys the enjoyment

This short story is set in Thailand. The narrator does an excellent Thai accent; even the Thai girls speaking English sounded so good I had to check if there were other people doing them. Every once in a while you hear the falsetto, but overall, these voices and the accent are superb. The Russian accents are not so good. And then when Kang and Cain fight, you can't tell who's getting beat because the names sound the same.

However, the rest of the narration is awful, just awful. Mr. Anderson has no grasp of natural sentence intonation, emphasis, or the meaning of commas. Almost every a is pronounced /ā/, as if there were some intended emphasis. He puts a hard g on the ends of words like hang or sing, so that when the girl throws her bag over her shoulder, it sounds like: she slunk her purse over her shoulder. But the worst is the commas. When descriptions include two words separated by a comma, Mr. Anderson stops. Dead stop. Longer than is called for by a period, to wit:

He saw the short. (pause, pause) Stout man walk into the room.
With soft. (pause, pause) Slow steps, he traced the smell.
Her eyes traversed his tight. (pause, pause) Taut muscles.

This is so prevalent that it interrupts the story and causes confusion and great annoyance to the extent that it was actually hard to tell if the writing was good or amateurish.

But in the end, when you get over the narration, you realize it really is a good story with a good hero. It ends with the setup for the volumes to come. It does not tell us about Cain's betrayal and the reason he is off the grid, but we can expect that to come. We know that he now owes a debt which may cost more to pay off than he expected. And we know that the Russian mob and the Thai/Burmese gangs will be after him. So expect some great action and heroism! Just hope for a new narrator.

Devil's Due: Not Sure This Book Worked for Me

Devil's Due was hard for me to follow with the character's voices being a odd. I think it would've been better had it been narrated differently. I couldn't tell if the female voice was dubbed in or if the reader was speaking it. Along with that the accents were an unnecessary distraction. This may be a better read than listen.

To separate them out, the story fell somewhere in the middle for me. it was okay.
The narration by Bryan L. Anderson seemed awkward but that's not saying I didn't like his natural voice. I think he has a wonderful voice without having to change it. He speaks clearly and has a nice tone. I'd listen to him again.

Horrible narration

I believe a poorly programed computer could narratate way better than this, I couldnt get past the 3rd chapter because of the terrible narration.

wonderful read

The Devil's Due was a wonderful read. Mr. Warren had my interest throughout the audio book with the story and characters. Mr. Anderson was a perfect choice as narrator. He has an amazing voice that kept my attention. I found myself not wanting to stop the book. I'm looking forward to the next book, not only for the story and character but also for the narrators captivating voice.

A Good, Straight Forward, Action Story.

Devil’s Due is a straight forward action story about former CIA agent, Thomas Caine. This short story is a prequel to “Tokyo Black,” book one in the Thomas Caine series. Living off the grid in Thailand after being betrayed by his agency, Thomas becomes embroiled in the affairs of human traffickers, the Russian mafia and a warlord who thinks he’s the devil. If you like the action/suspense genre that features ex government agents and exotic locals then you should give Devil’s Due a read/listen.

Bryan L. Anderson does the narration for this story and for the most part, does a fine job, but there is, (at least on my audio copy), a strange effect that almost sounds like one of those devices that distorts the voice. I’ve heard Mr. Anderson’s voice on another book that I own and although they are close, there is a difference. Maybe it’s the recording environment or the recording equipment used. Overall, it wasn’t a deal breaker for me, but I did notice it.
