Publisher's summary

Class reunions: a time for memories - good, bad, and, as Virgil Flowers is about to find out, deadly - in the thrilling new novel in the number one New York Times best-selling series.

Virgil knows the town of Trippton, Minnesota, a little too well. A few years back, he investigated the corrupt - and, as it turned out, homicidal - local school board, and now the town's back in view with more alarming news: A woman's been found dead, frozen in a block of ice. There's a possibility that it might be connected to a high school class of 20 years ago that has a midwinter reunion coming up, and so, wrapping his coat a little tighter, Virgil begins to dig into 20 years' worth of traumas, feuds, and bad blood. In the process one thing becomes increasingly clear to him. It's true what they say: High school is murder.

Critic reviews

“Along the way to the satisfying ending, Virgil displays the rough humor and rough justice that make him such an appealing character.” (Publishers Weekly)

“The tenth Flowers novel is a knowing portrait of small-town life layered into a very well plotted mystery. Virgil understands that, in small towns, no one ever outgrows high school, and he uses that knowledge to unravel both mysteries by dissecting the relationships and economic realities in the town. One of the very best novels in a superior series.” (Booklist, starred review)

“The reader’s quest to discover the whole truth will propel them forward, where [Sandford] has plenty of twists (and more than a few laughs) planted along the way. Deep Freeze is easily one of Sandford’s best Virgil Flowers novels yet.” (The Real Book Spy)

Virgil gets the s*** beat out of him...

By a bunch of women! While investigating the murder of another woman found in a frozen river. The woman is the bank president (reason enough for many to dislike her), in the process of getting a divorce from a man questioning his sexual identity and having an S&M tryst with someone Virgil can't identify.
At the same time a woman from the toy company Mattel is trying to find who is messing with their Barbie line of dolls. They're turning them into little sex dolls that say things they were never supposed to say or look (especially Ken's addition).
If you're familiar with the Virgil Flowers series then you're already getting ready for the sarcasm, snappy comebacks and great humor his character is known for. If you've never listened to a Flowers novel, they can be read as stand alone novels but for character development I would read/listen to them in the order they were written. But either way get ready for a real "humdinger" of a story.
Eric Conger is the voice of Flowers. He delivers crazy lines in dead pan that would have me rolling. Perfect.
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND that F*****g Flowers.

Murder mystery in small Minnesota town

Author John Sandford frustrates me! I have all 10 of his Virgil Flowers novels as well as 15 of his Lucas Davenport series. Yet, Sandford is far from one of my favorite authors even though I have rated all of his novels 4 or 5 stars. It seems to me that Sandford writes novels with very similar plots especially in the Flowers series; Virgil Flowers' process of solving crimes is too predictable.

Although the plot Deep Freeze seems to me to be very similar to some of the earlier books in the series there is enough new and different to make the novel enjoyable; indeed, I considered a 5 star rating. It lost the 5th star by the antagonist/killer being more a pathetic and self centered loser than evil.

So Much Fun

I do love the chance to peek into that ******' Flowers' life. the plants are always good, the dialogue is not contrived, and I never get the sense that the author is hashing over an old plot just to give us that glimpse. This book is no exception. it's also a treat to hear from some of our old favorites, even if they're just doing a drop in.

Not many surprises here

I don't think i like knowing up front who the killer is. It seems backwards to me & i keep wanting to scream out the answer to the detectives. there were some good side line stories though that kept the book from becoming too boring. it also brought out the people in this world who need help, so like i say not many surprises here.

As usual, Sandford delivers

Just finished listening and, once again, Virgil and crew provides a fun and interesting experience. Sandford's ability to build the characters over the span of the series is such that you go into each new book really knowing and feeling for the people involved. His knowledge of the geography lets you feel what's it's like to live thru the cold winters in Minnesota. The plot lines are always fresh and believable, and his knack of getting inside the head of each character makes each of them, however minor the role they play, jump off the page. Eric Conger does a great job of bringing the characters to life. You feel them as you listen. You find yourself liking or disliking characters just by the way they act. He does not turn Virgil Flowers into Jack Reacher or John Puller. He is not invincible. He is not capable of taking on 6 thugs and dropping them in the span of 16 seconds. He hurts. He bleeds. He sometimes forgets his gun, and he hates to fight. He gets beat up (in this case) by women. But he thinks. It's how he solves the crimes. I've read every one of the Sandford series involving both main characters: Lucas Davenport and Virgil Flowers, and they mesh together like a well-oiled machine. You find yourself laughing out loud over some of the antics. There's a joke in this book about Mickey Mouse. I almost ran off the road at the punch line. You have thoroughly believable and likeable characters like Johnson Johnson, who's father named him after his favorite outboard motors. What writer thinks of that stuff? The easy dialogue banter is as real as talking to your friends. Start listening and you immediately feel like you're in a comfortable place and the time is going to pass pleasantly. It does. The only downside is it passes much to quickly. Now I have a long wait before the next one.

Hey this is Sanford, Congers and Flowers - Buy It!

Don't start this series with Deep Freeze... Go to the first in this saga. You'll thank me for the advice.

Sad to say but very disappointed

I’ve enjoyed a majority of John Sandford books in Davenport and Flowers series, as well as his stand alone books. However, this book was a disappointment and makes me wonder if time to move on. There was no mystery, thrill, or any of the wonderful enticements that he has in his other books. It was a story that wasn’t very interesting nor worth my credit. I

I’m hoping that this isn’t a new trend for Sandford as I do like him as an author.

Eric Conger is the best

I'm a huge fan of John Sandford but, honestly, Eric Conger is wonderful! I thoroughly enjoyed the story and loved the characters. The only dissappointment was the re-use of the exterminators special 'tool' as a murder weapon.
Other than that I loved it...

You know the killer, and the intrigue is still 10

The only part I didn't like was that the story ended, but it's a great ending so I really didn't mind that either. This story was a fun and intriguing classic F_ _kin Flowers. You already know who the killer is, the fun is watching Virgil figure it out. And then's there's the sex barbies. A sub plot in a different direction and it enhances the story. John, you are the master

The worst 15 minutes of my life

I listened to the narrative drivel in the first chapter. I was waiting for Virgil, and didn’t get him. Ask yourself, John Camp, would any editor read beyond page one Without your name on it? I’m going to skip forward to see if Virgil appears. I’m not really hopeful, since the beginning narrative was crap. I am seriously disappointed. How did that get published?

Because of The enjoyment of your previous works I bought this. I hope to be able to continue. But I shouldn’t have to feel like I’m wasting my life in the first 15 minutes of narrative without a character I care about want to hate or want to love.
