Publisher's summary

Photojournalist by trade, distillery owner by blood, and amateur sleuth by necessity, Abigail Logan learns that murder can't stay bottled up forever in this charming Whisky Business Mystery.

It's been three months since Abi Logan last checked in on Abbey Glen, the celebrated whisky distillery she inherited. With her oversize wheaten terrier, Liam, by her side, Abi returns to the quaint Scottish village of Balfour. But her relaxing Highland homecoming takes a stressful turn when she unearths an unseemly bit of village history, welcomes a group of Japanese whisky enthusiasts, and becomes shepherdess to an unexpected flock of sheep - all within the first 24 hours. Still, nothing's more stressful than murder....

Local celebrity Rory Hendricks is the hotheaded, hard-rocking former frontman of the Rebels - and Abi's girlhood crush. After meeting him in person, Abi can't say no to anything he asks, like photographing his upcoming show...or figuring out who's trying to kill him. Turns out someone's been bumping off his old bandmates, with the drummer dead under mysterious circumstances and the keyboardist in a coma following a hit-and-run. Now a series of threatening messages leads Rory to think he's next on the chopping block. And the band has a devil's share of broken hearts and bitter disputes in their past, leaving Abi a huge batch of suspects to sift through - all before the killer takes another shot.

Flocks, Old Rockers, Bones and Blood

My, oh, My! I sure do hope that this series continues! Book two is just whetting my appetite! Distillery owner (and photo journalist), Abi Logan has just returned home to Balfour, Scotland after a three month assignment. Her first day back, bones are found on her property, she rescues eight sheep, and agrees (though reluctantly) to host a group of Japanese whisky enthusiasts at Abbey Glen distillery. Her next surprise is a meeting with an old rocker secluded on the adjoining property, who hires her to photograph his comeback concert. How do all these things tie in together? Well, in the most cozy and clever way imaginable . . . historical findings, going back to the Jacobites, the British taxation of whisky which led to illegal production in remote areas of Scotland, and many bloody battles are revealed . . . I SO want to learn and hear more about this . . . the peaceful grazing sheep, Liam, Abi's wheaten terrier, the crazy rantings of hot-headed old rocker, Rory Hendricks, and Abi on the search for the killer of those associated with the old band . . . and then there's Grant, co-owner of the distillery, pulled by the heels into hosting the reception for the visiting Japanese whiskey enthusiasts and playing host to Rory's twenty-something daughter, Summer . . . causing sparks to fly . . . I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the ins and outs of this tale . . . it is not smutty, although the author could've chosen to take it there, she didn't . . . it has the right amount of everything . . . mystery, history, family, bonds, and just a tad of romance . . . and the ending is perfect . . . and just like the local police, I did not have it figured out . . .

Flawless

I love the cadence of the narration of this book. There are a variety of accents, dialects, and backgrounds among the characters and the narrator has aced what must have been a challenging assignment. The story is sound and well-written. In particular, the main character makes full use of the English language without apology as one would expect from an educated professional. I wish this was more common and I felt it contributed to establishing the depth and identity of the character.

Good narration, uneven but entertaining story

This series fills a niche in that the characters are of an age that generally isn't featured in light mysteries. However, Liam (the protagonist's Wheaton Terrier) is by far the most interesting character. I like the plots of this series, and the whisky theme, but the heroine has never deduced the correct murderer, not once, not even close. Yet, somehow, she seems to think she's incredibly intuitive. Her ability to read people using three words is a silly device as it never leads to anything. There are some nice touches with some of the local characters and I like the narration. The main characters are just so forgettable.

Slow moving but good

Story moved a bit slow- good story
I find that Abby has a great ability to see details but yet forms in her mind the guilty party to her detriment.
The British history was really interesting. I’ll have to search how true it is.
Gemma does a very good job with the reading performance, and accents.

I never saw it coming

I read a lot; so I’m getting pretty good at solving mysteries before I'm halfway through the book. This writer in both the last book and this, had me completely off track. You’ll never guess “who”. You also will not get bored with the book or the characters. I for one will continue to read the series.

Great Sequel

Melinda Mullet enticed me into trying my first single malt whiskey with her first book of the series and her follow up was just as good. This second story doesn't have the background focus of the whiskey making, but it has a delightful old mystery of clan interwoven with the current day murder. Makes me want to research more on the Scottish vs English history of the 18th century. The clues on the current murder kept me guessing "who done it" right up to the final reveal. I also enjoyed catching up with town folk as Ms. Mullet developed some of the familiar characters from the first novel. Getting ready to order the 3rd book in the series and hoping a fourth is in the works.

Fun Cozy

Witty and well-written, with some clever banter and a few LOLs, though the overall tone isn’t humorous. Gemma Dawson does a good job with the accents and many different voices. I enjoyed hearing them and always knew who was talking (better than in the first book). So many great characters. Several mysteries, including a long-buried body, and plenty of historical interest with regards to smugglers and post-Culloden hardships. Details felt authentic, both in terms of the distillery and the rock concert, but not in the “I did the research and now you’re going to read it” way some authors have; they were actually integrated with the clues. I enjoyed the whole rock star thing too. The end was satisfying, but I was a bit disappointed in Abi, as I was in the first book. She really doesn’t do much to solve the mysteries.

Wee bit o' charm & a whole lot of mystery

I truly enjoyed listening to Death Distilled. I didn’t realize that it was the second book in a series of standalone cozy mysteries; the author gives sufficient background information so I had no problem diving into the story.

A story set around a distillery in the Highlands of Scotland is a good enough hook for me! The delightful main character, Abi Logan and her dog, Liam, are a crack team of amateur sleuths. These two, along with the fun cast of villagers, make this cozy mystery highly engaging. I loved the balance between the story and scene setting with the progression of the mystery. Too often in cozy mysteries, you have a murder, then a bunch of fluff, and then out of nowhere, the mystery is solved. There are ample clues and red herrings to keep every mystery lover engaged. Additionally, there are some side stories blended into the mystery. They provide local color as they mainly involve the villagers…or their livestock.

Charming characters, a little local mystery, and a big whodunnit in a fabulous setting make for a good cozy mystery. Author Melinda Mullet and narrator Gemma Dawson have hooked me on her Whisky Business series.

A page turner.

The characters are interesting and despite or perhaps because of their flaws, you care about them. Gemma Dawson's delivery keeps you as engaged as the plot and the two backstories entwined with it. Looking forward to reading more.
