Publisher's summary

In 1676, an unlikely pair - a young Puritan widow and an English spy - journeys across a land where greed and treachery abound.

Prudence Cotton has recently lost her husband and is desperate to find her daughter, captured by the Nipmuk tribe during King Philip's war. She's convinced her daughter is alive but cannot track her into the wilderness alone. Help arrives in the form of James Bailey, an agent of the crown sent to Boston to investigate the murder of Prudence's husband and to covertly cause a disturbance that would give the king just cause to install royal governors. After his partner is murdered, James needs help too. He strikes a deal with Prudence, and together they traverse the forbidding New England landscape looking for clues. What they confront in the wilderness - and what they discover about each other - could forever change their allegiances and alter their destinies.

Nearly Adequate and Forgettable

There are a few moments when the story almost reaches a basic level of adequacy, but it never manages to hit that mark. The plot and dialogue seem to be a fill-in-the-blank exercise from a middle school creative writing class, and the characters are one dimensional. Also, the author and editor didn't care enough to correct errors: the hero wishing to spend Christmas with his living father when the father's death is described early in the book, or the heroine's muddled timeline that suddenly changes months into years. The narrator is neither bad nor great. Overall, the entire experience was forgettable.

Excellent historical novel

A very good historical novel with a little bit of mystery thrown in. The aftermath of King Philip's War for the Puritans of Boston. Both the Indians and the Colonists fought a dirty battle in Crow Hollow. A very interesting story line combined with an excellent narrator makes for a great book.

Excellent historic lessons

The story was very predictable. But the historic setting and background was wonderful. The author did a great job of putting you in the time period.

Great historical fiction.

Thoroughly enjoyed this story. A little of everything - suspense, mystery, action, history and romance.
As a fan of historical fiction this book is one of the best. I can already picture the movie it could become.

A wonderful work of American historical fiction

If you like the novels of frank Yerby and Frank Slaughter of a generation (or has it been two?) ago or even like good westerns--yes, perfect! A New England western, you'll love this adventure filled with history, mystery intrigue and romance.

unlikely reader

I read 95% nonfiction or technical material. I listened to the sample narration of this book and was intrigued by the woman's voice. After reading the synopsis and reviews decided to take a chance on it. I wasn't sure that I would make the 10 hour stint. Turned out I listened to straight though! Rosemary ' s amazing voice had alot to do with it
The story held my interest even though I'm not a overly sentimental guy,but I felt a strong sense of empathy for Priscilla and actually shed a tear. I'm glad I did take a chance.

Crow Hollow was awesome!

I love the adventure, the demure woman who turned into a lioness to find her child. I loved that Prudence became a leader and full of confidence in herself with the help and support of the man she fell in love with.

The sadness, and criminal conduct caused by the adversaries. Mysteries solved and awesome ending.

The performance by Ms. Benson was wonderful!
