Intensely Gripping with an Engaging Mystery

What made the experience of listening to Cipher the most enjoyable?

"Cipher" is one of those novels that manages to very quickly hook you with a vivid and intensely gripping story... only to turn it on its head and then take you on a wildly action-packed ride as Detective Jonathan Grace finds himself on the hunt for the mysterious cipher, a program that could very well be a massive tool of destruction in the wrong hands. The novel is well-written with a lush writing style and an engaging plot; using authentic characters and strong dialogue, the author propels the plot along with amazing skill.

What does Smokey Rivers bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

What I liked about the audiobook and the narration is that it adds a new element to the story, helping to bring dimension, emotion and nuances to the novel that I might have missed if I just read the book. The narrator has a gift for sucking the audience in and keeping you eagerly listening from start to finish.

Great thriller

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

The plot is suspenseful and high-paced, a techno-thriller in which the detective Jonathan Grace is tasked with finding a cipher USB drive which can decrypt even the most complicated encryption. He is hired by gangsters which pay him a million dollars. Very enjoyable book for lovers of tech-inspired fiction. I was hooked to listening it right away and it was tremendously intriguing. Highly recommended.

An exciting mystery

Have you listened to any of Smokey Rivers’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

It's pretty good, though his attempt at an Italian accent was laughable.

Any additional comments?

Sometimes techno thrillers lose me with all the geek detail but this one flowed nicely and made a very long road trip a lot less boring. Jonathan is a believable character and it was easy to get lost in the story. The whole situation with the cipher was pretty intense.

Overall it provided me with a great escape during a lengthy and tedious road trip and that's why I downloaded it in the first place.

Cipher

Would you listen to Cipher again? Why?

I recently moved about a 45 minute drive from my work. Audiobooks are definitely my new best friends!

Cipher was the first one I listened to on my long drives. Honestly, it was a little crazy listening to a book and driving. I would get so involved in the story that I would forget I was actually operating a vehicle.

Jonathan was a flawed and believable character. I really ended up liking him a lot. The cipher drive that everyone was looking for seemed believable enough. I'm not a huge technology guru, but even I could comprehend just how catastrophic such a device could potentially be.

Highly recommend!

What does Smokey Rivers bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

A great narration of the story. It really draws you in and doesn't let go.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, I would actually stay in the car sometimes.

Couldn't take it. Stopped listening at chapter 5

Would you try another book from Robert Stohn and/or Smokey Rivers?

No on both counts

What could Robert Stohn have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Learn to write. Seriously, I've never seen a writer depend so heavily on adjectives and cliches. Also, it would help if he actually learned about his subject so when he writes about the technical aspects of the plot, his (mis)use of the terminology isn't so cringeworthy.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

I listened to this book with my wife and her brother on a long road trip. The narrator didn't bother me all that much, but both wife and brother were complaining about the lack of affect in the narrator's voice before the end of the first chapter. They also commented on his inability to produce a realistic Italian accent.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

Not really. Maybe it could have later in the book... I just couldn't struggle through to find out.

Any additional comments?

I'm SHOCKED this book had 5 stars. It makes me question the integrity of Audible's rating system.
