Publisher's summary

A man is discovered stabbed to death in a nature reserve, a ball of cloth rammed in his throat. When a second body is found, Carruthers is convinced that the reason for the deaths lies in the past. But how is the historical disappearance of a boy, the murder of a former journalist and a bitter dispute about a nature reserve connected? Are they hunting for one killer...or more?

Critic reviews

"A police procedural that delights the reader with a strong sense of place. Tartan Noir at its best." (Sarah Ward, author of In Bitter Chill, on Robbing the Dead)

Mixed feelings

I did enjoy this second Carruthers novel, but not the story line. It was sad and depressing. I'm aware that the subject matter exists and needs to be addressed, but I read novels to escape real life trauma not be embroiled in it when I want to be entertained. As usual the main characters are interesting and intelligent with their own life problems and I look forward to the next and hope better book.
