Old pulp adventure refreshed for a new generation

What made the experience of listening to Captain Hazzard and the Python Men of the Lost City the most enjoyable?

This story translated perfectly to audio. The pacing of the story was sublime, the sheer action was incredible, and the adventure stimulated my imagination, as any good pulp novel should.

What about Joe Stofko’s performance did you like?

The narration was clean and clear. Not over the top. He did not exaggerate the characters, as some do when they read pulp. The story was read with a gravitas and a pacing that was not only appropriate for the story, but lent emphasis the portions I probably missed when I originally read it.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

The book made me think and imagine. I could picture the action, the adventure. I could put myself in the place of any of the characters. It is what the original authors wanted us to do. The story is as real as any pulp adventure story - meaning, not really. But it doesn't matter, I can still place myself in the fun of Captain Hazzard and his gang.

Any additional comments?

The introduction explains how the story both came to be and then came to be rewritten. It is a wonderful story and being able to experience the revised version is a testament to how strong the characters are and how compelling a novel it is. The audio version is an excellent way to experience it. It is not long, well read, clear and understandable. The narration does not get in the way of the story at all. The novel is an excellent read. However, if you want to have a good time with an adventure pulp, this audio book is just as good. I highly recommend this to anyone interested in pulp fiction or adventure novels.
