Critic reviews

"January LaVoy's expert narration engages listeners.... She finds outstanding, distinctive voices for the various charismatic characters - from writers to academics to FBI agents. The sardonic edge to the dialogue includes all those involved in the book business, and LaVoy appears to enjoy their parties and conversations." ( AudioFile)

John Grisham is best known for his fast-paced legal thrillers and mysteries, many of which have been adapted for television and film. Because he’s so prolific and has been writing for decades, it can be difficult to know where to begin when selecting a title from his impressive back catalog. And Grisham is definitely a jack-of-all-trades: he’s written not only legal thrillers, but nonfiction, a series for kids, some humorous novels, and recently, a new mystery series outside of the legal thriller genre. Summer read

January Lavoy was an adequate narrator for this novel, pleasant voice for a pleasant book. I listened to it pretty much straight though so it held my interest but somehow I was left unsatisfied and I'm really not sure why.

A Fun Summer Read

John Grisham totally changed his writing content and style in his new book. The story opened with the robbery of five manuscripts of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novels from a high-security vault at Princeton University. The manuscripts are valued at twenty-five million dollars. The FBI’s Rare Asset Recovery Unit made a couple of arrests and then the investigation stalled. A rare asset retrieval company recruited Mercer Mann, a struggling writer, to go in as a mole to their prime suspects, Bruce Kable’s, new and rare bookstore on Camino Island.

The book is well written and the suspense builds throughout the story. The story is more of a cat-and-mouse type of tale. I am impressed with how Grisham ties his various plot threads together. This book is about writing, independent publishing, independent bookstores and the theft of rare books. How could I, an avid reader, not like the book.

I read this as an audiobook downloaded from Audible. The book is almost nine hours long. January LaVoy does a good job narrating the book. LaVoy is a well-known actress and audiobook narrator.

Another Wonderful Fun Grisham Novel

I'm a huge Grisham fan and have only had one listen (novel) that I didn't love. Besides great characters, awesome pacing, a wonderful reader, and a absorbing story... like all his books I learned a lot too particularly about book collecting. Don't miss this one.

A bit disappointing

I've loved most all of his books but this one just didn't grab me like others.

A great reading of a great book!

This is a great read and a great listen. Worth the time. Grisham didn’t disappoint with this novel. It was a good break from the lawyerly writings.

Enjoyed this story very much

John Grisham is a word smith like no other. For those who gave poor reviews are incorrect on their comments in my opinion. I have read every one of his books. Bought the book to read as I didn't like the narrators take on the story, this may be the problem for those who gave bad reviews. For me this gave me a take on his writing from his view of writing. Loved it, and it will take its place in my total library of Grisham's wonderful writing. Read the book, you will like it better!!!

Departure for Grisham, Still Intriguing

Any follower of John Grisham, a lawyer turned author, knows he's written many books where the main stage is lawyers, judges and the law. Camino Island is one of the few by Grisham that departs from those scenes. We also have a new narrator in January LaVoy who does a very nice job but no one will top my favorite reader Michael Beck.

Camino Island goes into the land of book stores, rare books and even rarer manuscripts along with those who steal such items. There's a bit of a love interest, some real characters and some still discovering what they want to be when they grow up.

Once again I found myself begging the author not to end the book. I just wanted more.

Beware the finish!

Literary lovers will eat this up, until the very end. It's pretty difficult to forgive that.

Suspense

It kept me guessing. I thought I had it figured out and then there was a turn. I recommend this book.
