Publisher's summary

In the new novel featuring war veteran Peter Ash, "an action hero of the likes of Jack Reacher or Jason Bourne" (Lincoln Journal-Star), Ash has a woman's life in his hands - and her mystery is stranger than he could ever imagine.

War veteran Peter Ash sought peace and quiet among the towering redwoods of Northern California, but the trip isn't quite the balm he'd hoped for. The dense forest and close fog cause his claustrophobia to buzz and spark, and then he stumbles upon a grizzly long thought to have vanished from this part of the country. In a fight of man against bear, Peter doesn't favor his odds, so he makes a strategic retreat up a nearby sapling.

There he finds something strange: a climbing rope affixed to a distant branch above. It leads to another and another, up through the giant tree canopy, ending at a hanging platform. On the platform is a woman on the run. From below them come the sounds of men and gunshots.

Just days ago investigative journalist June Cassidy escaped a kidnapping by the men who are still on her trail. She suspects they're after something belonging to her mother, a prominent software designer who recently died in an accident. June needs time to figure out what's going on and help from someone with Peter's particular set of skills.

Only one step ahead of their pursuers, Peter and June must race to unravel this peculiar mystery. What they find leads them to an eccentric recluse, a shadowy pseudomilitary organization, and an extraordinary tool that may change the modern world forever.

Critic reviews

"Readers can expect some good twists on the way to a hair-raising finish. Another fine thriller in what's shaping up to be a hell of a series." ( Kirkus Reviews)
"A suspenseful high-tech ride, complete with a steadily mounting body count and a compelling protagonist." ( Booklist)
"A top-notch series of thrillers marked by a considerable sympathy for veterans.... Aficionados of Lee Child's Jack Reacher will enjoy getting to know this new action hero." ( Library Journal)

Great

I have always loved the Jack Reacher series now I've found a similar one. Ash is not Reacher but I do love the differences. Take a chance I did and was pleasantly surprised.

Immersing

Peter Ash series, book 2, is outstanding. The adventures and thrills keep coming, and also a new character, June, is brought into the novel. Peter has his hands full with trying to protect his new lady friend, stay alive himself, and continue to deal with his PTSD. I binged through this book just as I did the first one. The characters are bright and fun. Stephen Mendel continues to deliver as narrator. Autor, Nick Petrie, keeps it exciting and fun and has become one of my favorite authors.

Language

Love to read/listen to a good story but as a Christian I would be hesitant to follow this series for all the unnecessary use of God in the writing.
The author could just say ‘damn!’

Good read

The Peter Ash series is an easy to read action novel. I find myself finishing them in a couple days. The characters are easy to relate to and follow. My only complaint would be the occasional misuse of military or firearms terms. I would assume that Peter, being a veteran of several battles, would know the difference. It’s obvious the author has a very limited knowledge of firearms. Otherwise, it’s a good read ans I recommend it.

Great story, great everything

I loved everything about this book, the plot as well as the characters. I gave the narration 4 stars only because it was maybe a beat too slow. Not enough to make you want to hit fast forward but enough to be aware of it throughout the book. Other than the slowness the narration was very good.

Fetching story. Not quite Jack Reacher level

Narrator lets Peter and June sound like overexcited kids. Always like constantly shouting. Good Story
