Publisher's summary

Bubba Snoddy is a good old country boy with a big problem. Although he's personable, handsome, and lives in a historical Southern mansion in a small Texas town, he has just discovered the dead body of a woman to whom he was once engaged to marry. His ex-fiancée was responsible for Bubba being thrown out of the military, which in turn caused his shameful return to the tiny town of Pegramville, where everyone is a consummate gossip, and no one has any secrets.

Sheriff John Headrick believes Bubba killed his ex-fiancée in a fit of vengeful rage. The townsfolk believe that Bubba killed his ex-fiancée in a fit of vengeful rage. Bubba's own mother believes that Bubba killed his ex-fiancée in a fit of vengeful rage. To top it all off, there are some mighty strange goings-on at the Snoddy Mansion, where ghosts walk the halls rattling chains in the midnight hour, and Bubba's own sainted mother, Miz Demetrice, runs an illegal gambling ring. Rumors run merrily rampant about Bubba, decadent Snoddy ancestors, missing Civil War gold, a to-die-for sheriff's deputy with the greenest eyes Bubba has ever seen, and a Basset Hound named Precious who likes to nip first and ask questions later. Bubba has to find out exactly who did murder his ex-fiancée and quickly before he goes to jail for the crime, or before someone murders him.

A fun southern mystery!

First things first, the name Bubba Snotty instantly had me hooked. It's a hilarious name that fits the character so perfectly! And Bubba's mom, Miss Demetrius is absolutely hilarious. She's a loud and loving southern mother who says the most hysterical things. Anytime she speaks about her late husband (who died of a heart attack) she jokingly makes up a new way that she killed him. For example she would say, "your father, before I shot him dead with a muzzle..." Or "before I poisoned your father," and it's so so funny in the book. Bubba takes his mothers flair with a grain of salt, as he is a calm and down to earth simple guy who compliments her perfectly.

Bubba gets wrapped up in a murder when his ex fiancé shows up dead on his property & there's no one else to blame except bubba. He has to clear his name & find the real killer before he is behind bars for life. Along with his trusty sidekick dog 'Precious,' the two companions start to collect clues while running into some humorous roadblocks along the way.

This is a great southern cozy mystery & I love that it's not your typical "hick" or "trailer park low IQ" kind of shtick. Everyone is educated & it's a realistic story in many regards. The narration was spot on for all the characters & my favorite part was at the end when all the different townsfolk start collecting up as they head to different locations to solve the mystery once & for all. There were a lot of big personalities together in one large scene & it was a ton of fun! I received this book as a gift in exchange for an honest review & I honestly loved this listen & would have happily paid a credit for it! I'm looking forward to more books in this series!

Drive and listen

A nice read for a road trip, although the narration got a little much a few times, so DEEPLY southern that it brought banjos to mind. I did figure out the perp before the end, but that didn't spoil anything, and there is still a surprise at the denouement. All in all, worth a recommendation.

Good old fashioned story writing.

This story sounds like it might be hokey and just not too funny - that couldn't be more wrong. The story is kinda hokey, but I loved the story, the plot, and the characters. Bubba's mom is hilarious! If you've ever lived in the South, or love stories about the South, check out this book. The narrator is amazing and seemed to get the right voices for each character. I almost felt like I was looking back at my high school and some of my relatives. This book is kind of a mystery combined with southern comedy.

Seriously, give the book a try it really is very addicting.

I received this audiobook from the author, narrator, or publisher for free via audiobookblast in exchange for an unbiased review. However, if I did not like the book, I would have just vaguely gave a synopsis and just left it at that.

great fun!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes if I had a friend that read this kind of book. The humor is really clever and not the usual dumb southern redneck stuff.

What does Michael Gilboe bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Excellent narration. His voice sounds a lot like voice overs from Disney specials from my childhood and I kept having flashbacks to that. However it was spot on and I can't imagine a more perfect voice for this book. Tone was great as was the cadence.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Definitely made me chuckle. Many many times.

Any additional comments?

Ok, it's not Shakespeare but for what it is (cozy down south mystery) it was great. I will definitely read more of this series.

Dumb Dumb Dumb

I didn't get the appeal of a stereotypical southern redneck so I quit listening after about an hour. Life is too short!

Refreshing!

Nice to have a southern gentleman named Bubba portrayed as something other than a mouth breather. Very funny and interesting book. Loved Bubba's mother Miz Demetrice. What southern lady doesn't want to grow up to run illegal gambling for all ur friends? Read for review and was so worth it!

Bubba sites knows how to find trouble!!

I was given this book in exchange for a honest review. Bubba Snoddy sure knows how to find trouble. When dead bodies suddenly appear everywhere he goes. But the sheriff and the town have already gave him his sentence, now he must clear his own name with some help from his mama and a sheriff deputy.

Bubba Rocks!

I think I'm in love with Bubba! This listen was great and funny all the way through. Bubba is a big country boy from a small town. The small town is torn between believing Bubba is a killer and believing that he is innocent of killing his ex-fiance. Bubba knows he didn't kill her. What Bubba doesn't know is why someone would kill his ex-fiance and then set him up to take the fall. How Bubba solves the case is a very entertaining listen.

Michael Gilboe was awesome as he brought this story to life. The southern accents were not overdone and he captured just the right tone throughout.

A cozy southern mystery

Where does Bubba and the Dead Woman rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I really enjoyed listening to this book. Buddy is quite the character. He is thoughtful and caring but a the same time not one to be run over. I liked him a lot!

What did you like best about this story?

I liked that the main characters were not the stereotypical 'southern hick' kind of people. They are smart and educated people who are 'normal' in their own way.

Which character – as performed by Michael Gilboe – was your favorite?

It's a toss up between Bubba and his mother Miz Demetrice. He is down to earth and she is out there at times. Between the illegal poker ring she runs and the every changing way she claims to have 'killed' her husband (he died of a heart attack}, you don't know what she is going to say next

Any additional comments?

I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a cozy southern mystery that is light on the romance but heavy on the humor and laughter.

OK! This is an over the top cliche of Texas rednecks! The plot of who wants to prove Bubba guilty of murder and why is good, but a bit strange.

The narration was well done. The characters were not given the proper Texas accent.
