Publisher's summary

Lieutenant Joe Gunther is in Vermont's Northeast Kingdom investigating a minor embezzling case. It's a pleasant distraction and a chance to reconnect with old friends, but when a house fire reveals itself to be arson, compounded by murder, Gunther can't help but investigate. He quickly finds himself enmeshed in a web of animosity between put-upon townspeople, the state police, angry parents, and members of a reclusive sect. Murder follows murder, yet no one seems to be telling Gunther the whole truth - not even his childhood friends. And truth is what he desperately needs if he's to stop the killings.

Kept you guessing

A whodunit that kept you guessing until the end. Characters were well-developed and story was tight

Good mystery.

I’m hooked on the series - love the main character Joe Gunther. Like the way he thinks. The story was complex but I still enjoyed it and will go on to the next in the series.

As good as the 1st

Took a lil time to pick up speed, but the payoff was well worth it.

Going back home is never easy

Looking into something back home is never easy when you are a detective and that is the case with Joe.
Old friends are not what they seem and new ones are kinda scary too!

Snidely Whiplash in PLANO TX

Interesting story! Kept me motivated to find out the ending. Maybe too much vulgar language (depicting the type of people in the story); maybe deflect some of the words’ harshness.
Go Joe Gunther!

good read

The story was good. I am Harry Bosch fan. Joe is an interesting cop and the crime is interesting. The readers voice is quite fitting for Joe but I struggled keeping track of other characters as the voices were too much alike. I did not care for the prologue. Why was it there? I will read more by Archer Mayor.

Favorite

It's my favorite book in the series so far! Very good! Archer has quite a knowledge about the subject and intertwined fact and fiction so effortlessly
