The narration didn't do any favours
Gregory's books always have loads of characters and interwoven plots that can require a lot of attention - or a pad and paper! They are also fun. This is the first time I've tried the audio version and have to say the narrator failed to distinguish the characters so that conversation became muddle and made events hard to follow. I'll go back to her books on the kindle

Good but too complex a plot?
There are some books that you simply can't put down (or stop listening too) but this is not one of them. This is the third Thomas Chaloner book I have listened to but if it had been the first I think I may have missed the others. The plot is, as is usual with Susanna Gregory's books, complex but there are just too many characters in the book and you can at times get lost with who is doing what. Having listened to the other books, some are familiar characters and this helped but if it had been the first of her books I had listened to, I might have been mystified at times. Basing the characters on true historical characters can be limiting with what you do,and at times you wish some of them would simply disappear but they can't. The story is good but not the best but Gordon Griffin does a good job of characterisation and this helps with following the story.
If you've not listened to a Susanna Gregory book before don't start with this one. I would recommend a Body in the Thames or one of her Matthew Bartholomew books.
