This is, at the end of the day a decent financial thriller. It takes place in the realms of the super rich viewing events from multiple points of view amongst a cast of very affluent and in most cases fairly dis-likeable characters. A Greek arms dealer, a French Viscount and a rich London stockbroker are among them.
However, for those (like me) who approached it thinking we were getting a brand new book from Peter James alarm bells started ringing very early. The entertaining opening scenes on Britain's motorways are well done but it quickly becomes obvious that this is not a contemporary novel. The book was in fact written and first published in the early 80s, the author took them out of print for decades and some web sites cite this decision as being because he felt his earlier books were not up to his current standards. When I checked today he does not include them in the list of his books on his website . . .
The book does develop at an interesting pace once you get used to the time period it is set in. Leighton Pugh does a very decent job of narration and I did enjoy listening to it. However, the ending does push things a bit far and I never really got to care about Alex Rocq partly because most of the book covers the other characters and partly because, well he isn't that likeable.
I'd summarise by saying that this is an okay way to spend a few hours. However, this isn't the book you should judge Peter James by and fans of his other books may not get as much out of this one.
Note to Audible: In my view you should make it more obvious that this is a re-release of an old book and not a brand new one.
