Never Mind the Twist - read it because it's good.

Within the first few minutes of listening to the well-narrated Between You and Me, the author makes these things very clear: 1) I am meant to know that Sal and Charlie's marriage is abusive- one partner suffers domestic violence at the other's hands; and 2) our androgynously-named partners are not "him" and "her" or "him and him" or "her and her"- they are, and shall remain, "Sal" and "Charlie." (Later, there will be an "Alex" inserted into the plot, but Alex will not be helpful, because Alex is also genderless).

I almost hit stop and delete. But I didn't. Because Lisa Hall has a way of writing simple, straightforward, punchy sentences that turn into thoughtful paragraphs that demonstrate exactly what is happening, let the reader feel the emotion, insert the pain and anger, or the triumph and the sense of such strong feeling for a character- that the reader moves with the story. You're just there. You are in the kitchen with Sal, you are in the office with Charlie. The story goes and moves and kills you and picks you up and makes you keep your wits about you because you need them, because you will experience some intense emotions from beginning to end. It is not maudlin, it is not overwrought, it is not a soap opera. You may think you know the twist, but you don't know all the twists.

The story is told from the points of view of Sal and Charlie back and forth throughout, in a contemporaneous manner that is very interesting to experience. There are some look-backs to show the history of the relationship, but no more than needed to demonstrate the points to the reader. Same as the rest of the book. The less-AS-more approach just really worked for me with this story.

In the end, I think Between You and Me was a great read. Certainly, suspense enough to satisfy, and psychologically a mindbender. This is a worthy, well-written book, and I recommend it.

Amazing until the end

I was captivated by this book. I loved the storyline, the performance, the structure of how it flipped from perspective, but 2 chapters before the end, they story flipped... the husband suddenly became the wife and vice Versa. I was so confused. Totally ruined the book for me. Aside from that, the book was amazing. Now I can't even recommend it. Feeling like a just broke up with someone haha. It was great while it lasted and then without warning, it went wrong.

Lame

“Big twist”? Hardly. Considering the book was marketed as having a big twist, it wasn’t that hard to figure out. I’m no rocket scientist but given how the narration went, I figured out what this so-called big twist was within the first chapter. Take that out of it and it’s just another book about a bad marriage. Nothing special.

Between You And Me Is An Insult to My Intelligence

I am angry. I am angry that I took the time to listen to a 'psychological thriller' that had no thrills and no surprises.

I figured out the situation in the first few chapters.

Things aren't always as they seem, true- but this book glares with obviousness. The narrator tries to trick you with her voice inflection.

This story is an insult to the intelligence of readers and listeners. Don't waste a credit.

Great, until the ending

I loved the book and had great expectations for how it would conclude, but I truly hated the ending.

False Title (no spoilers)

This book was absolutely NOT a psychological thriller in any way, shape, or form. This is a story about an abusive relationship. It is told in alternating voices from both the husband's and wife's point of view. As for the "twist" at the end, frankly I didn't see it as a twist because it didn't affect the plot in any way. Very disappointing! This would be better characterized as "chick lit". Just a story of an abusive relationship. It's not a terrible book but I was looking for a thriller and this is NOT one.

Good until the end

I think they messed up on the ending... I was so confused.... there's no way I would be able to read this again, I already had to listen to the ending three times to figure out what and who they were talking about

No Twist, only Obvious

Very disappointing. So-called twist was obvious from the start, and forced the story to be told in a contrived manner.
