Editorial reviews

Editors Select, January 2017 - It's no secret that there has been a huge influx of suspenseful, psychological thrillers featuring unreliable narrators and multiple POVs. And though I enjoy this genre immensely, I generally know how a story will end fairly quickly. Behind Her Eyes, Sarah Pinborough's debut adult thriller, is the only book of this nature that left me guessing until the very last word. Justifiably, Behind Her Eyes is popping up on social media adorned with the hashtag #wtfthatending - and it's still a month out from publication. I was completely glued to this book as I tried to untangle the crazy web of lies and deceit between husband and wife David and Adele and David's secretary, Louise. The narrators are perfect for their respective characters and left me with a constant yet strangely enjoyable feeling of mistrust and doubt. --Laura, Audible Editor

Publisher's summary

Soon to be a Netflix Original series!

The instant New York Times and number-one international best seller

“You should read Behind Her Eyes.... It’s bloody brilliant.” (Stephen King)

"An eerie thriller...Pinborough keeps us guessing about just who’s manipulating whom - until the ending reveals that we’ve been wholly complicit in this terrifying mind game.” (The New York Times Book Review)

Why is everyone talking about the ending of Sarah Pinborough's Behind Her Eyes?

Louise is a single mom, a secretary, stuck in a modern-day rut. On a rare night out, she meets a man in a bar, and sparks fly. Though he leaves after they kiss, she's thrilled she finally connected with someone.

When Louise arrives at work on Monday, she meets her new boss, David. The man from the bar. The very married man from the bar...who says the kiss was a terrible mistake but who still can't keep his eyes off Louise.

And then Louise bumps into Adele, who's new to town and in need of a friend. But she also just happens to be married to David. And if you think you know where this story is going, think again, because Behind Her Eyes is like no other book you've heard before.

David and Adele look like the picture-perfect husband and wife. But then why is David so controlling? And why is Adele so scared of him?

As Louise is drawn into David and Adele's orbit, she uncovers more puzzling questions than answers. The only thing that is crystal clear is that something in this marriage is very, very wrong. But Louise can't guess how wrong - and how far a person might go to protect their marriage's secrets.

Sarah Pinborough's Behind Her Eyes takes the modern-day love triangle and not only turns it on its head but completely reinvents it in a way that will leave listeners reeling.

Critic reviews

"All four narrators smoothly transition between the complex characters and the dark side of this contemporary love triangle. As Louise's sense of disorientation and dread build, listeners will be hooked on both plot and performance." (AudioFile)

HATED the ending

I don't want to ruin this book for anyone, but I found the ending to be truly awful. This book was incredibly suspenseful and original in its story line, but I hated they way I felt when it was over. I'm unsettled and not in a good way. I didn't find the end to be clever, but written specifically for shock value. I hated it. I wish I had never spent my time listening to this book. I'm saddened by it.

What the heck...

I listen to audible while I'm working or driving to and from work. Let me just say, you need to listen intently in the beginning, or you'll miss stuff in the end and you'll be very confused. The ending was great, until the very last plot twist, and then I was just annoyed. I don't think I would actually recommend this book to anyone.

Rolling My Eyes: A Review.

Half way through this book I thought maybe the reason I wasn't enjoying it (even remotely!) was because I wasn’t in the psycho-thriller mood. No. My mood is not taking responsibility. Let's start with the annoying characters: Louise is an idiot, Adele is a passive aggressive bitch, and David, let’s just say you have talked to cardboard boxes with more personality and depth than this guy. I can suspend disbelief like a champ but this book went way too far. Would the eventual plot twist and ending worked if it was just a plotting, revenge tale? Did it need the spoiler [supernatural twist]? Honestly, the way this love/revenge tale is solved/resolved is incredulous and wrought with holes that the book left me plain mad. Oh, and the #WTFthatending that all the rave reviews claimed would make this book the read of a lifetime, not so much. It makes me even more irate. Obviously, I am in the minority #DGAF.

The ending felt stuck on

This is a hard novel to review because it was one kind of book two-thirds of the way through (a pretty gripping thriller about characters caught in a love triangle) but then, towards the end, it became something completely different (a kind of paranorma/horrorl twist). When the plot veers off in this new direction, I was incredibly disappointed. It seemed, well, so stupid and preposterous--coming out of nowhere (and then going on and on and on in an attempt to explain it). That said, the actual thought behind the story was actually original. Where I think the book failed was that there wasn't enough to suggest, along the way, that this was where the novel was going. It takes you totally by surprise, but not necessarily in a good way ("Say, whaaat?!!"). That said, it was an original thought and I'll probably give the author another chance.

A fantastic, engaging story, hands-down

If you could sum up Behind Her Eyes in three words, what would they be?

Expressive, dramatic, captivating!

Who was your favorite character and why?

I don't mind being a fan of a villain who shows such diabolically planned-out chaos, and Adele is one of these. Talk about an absorbing backstory and an even better present-day trophy wife come tragic victim come evil genius. One almost has to respect going to such lengths to hang onto the man she loves so very, very much...

What about the narrators’s performance did you like?

Each of the narrators did a great job with their respective characters and truly brought them to life.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

To Sleep perchance to Dream

Any additional comments?

I really enjoyed this book and appreciated its use of a little fantasy to make it stand apart from others in this genre. This was not overdone, in my opinion, and it's use & effects on the characters' lives was appealing in that sense. There was something to like and to dislike about each character, so the common bad guy/good guy scenario was not really at play. Each person contributes to his and her situation in his own way.
As for the ending, I was not appalled at all, as some reviewers. I for one didn't see it coming at all, and was pleasantly riveted once I got it. I felt that the end was not disconnected at all from the story, and would encourage readers to not let it keep you from experiencing this engaging and wholly entertaining story. Overall, I loved it and highly recommend!

You lost me at 'Lucid Dreams'

Oh man, what a load of crap! I cannot believe I wasted 12 hours of my life on this nonsense.

I enjoyed the first of this book or believe me it would have been returned. I prefer thriller/suspense genre books and this book did the ol switcheroo into sci fi!

This book is about a nice lady named Louise who meets a dashing young David at a bar. They kiss and sparks fly until she meets her new boss the next morning and it just happens to be her new love interest. And if that isn't bad enough he is married! And if THAT isn't bad enough she becomes friends with his wife! So all this was very interesting and intriguing until all of a sudden the story veers off into The twilight zone. I won't bore you with the details or give spoiler alerts to those of you who choose to use a credit on this novel. But the book goes into lucid dreaming and becomes absolutely preposterous! And the nice Louise character turns into the most bumbling character ever. I was so disgusted, I could barely listen to the last half. The ending is just so stupid. I just I can't even...good luck to you on this one guys! Sooo disappointed in this one!!

Oh my, the twists!

Where does Behind Her Eyes rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I usually read complex, literary fiction, but I also love a good psychological thriller. This one was so involving that I kept wanting to listen instead of work. I found myself relishing commutes, errands, and long walks so that I had an excuse to keep listening. Highly recommended!

What was one of the most memorable moments of Behind Her Eyes?

The twists at the end. Please people, don't give anything away!

What about the narrators’s performance did you like?

Excellent narration, capturing the tone, cadence, and personality of the different characters.

Huh?

Usually long-winded, I think I can sum this one up quickly: jumped the shark or bait and switch. It's like making an appointment with a psychiatrist--showing up and finding a gypsy with a crystal ball or an Ouija board.

Maybe expecting that as you go into this, you can enjoy it a little more. The writing is decent and even the story (ies) interesting until. The narration is done well if you can forgive the spotty Scottish burr.

An outlandish story doesn't make it a good one

This book was such a drag, I really regret wasting a credit on this… It was SO slow starting out and I kept waiting for something to captivate my interest but it never happened. Half way through I was just annoyed and wanted it to be over already.
Louise has no redeeming qualities, all her choices just left me annoyed and rolling my eyes. She never learns from anything and keep making the same stupid choices. All of her relationships are odd and seem unusual, I found myself questioning her interactions with her son, when he went on vacation she completely forgot he existed. David has 0 personality, especially for someone who’s supposed to be SO captivating, and Adele was just as bland as Louise.
I did not care for this story at all; the ending did not make this book worthwhile. Everything felt underwhelming until the end, which was unusual and unrealistic.
Obviously, there were people who enjoyed this book, but my advice is to save your credit.

Mind. Blown.

Insane narrative. It starts like a regular "oops the husband cheated and the wife might find out" plot. But the more you learn about the characters, the more you get invested in the potential deceit behind the innocence. Who can you trust? How does she spy and know literally EVERYTHING? You WILL speed through this novel because you won't be able to stand another moment not knowing what will undoubtedly have to be revealed by the resolution of the book. Think you figured it out? Wait there's more. Oh wait there's more again. And more still. The end will twist your mind. And then again and then again. Like suspense? You will LOVE this book. I was so impressed.
