Publisher's summary

After being blacklisted for having communist sympathies as a student twenty years before, Pulitzer Prize - winning historian Tom Wrought escapes America's Cold War climate to teach at Oxford. There, he falls in love with Liz Spencer, a beautiful married woman. When Liz's husband is pushed in front of a train in the London Underground, Tom is immediately arrested for the murder. Scotland Yard is convinced it has its man, as he had means, motive, and opportunity.

Certain of his innocence, Liz hires a young solicitor, Alice Silverstone, to defend Tom. But they discover that Tom's former secret work as an American spy made him a number of powerful enemies. Russian intelligence, British counterespionage, and even the FBI all may have reason to frame him. If Liz and Alice can find out who is behind the murder, they stand a chance of freeing Tom, but doing so puts all their lives at risk.

Performance ruins the story

the performance is awful, accent ridiculous . it ruined the book for me I could not listen. I am not British and I recognized this was not a native speaker.

Historical intrigue

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, great story, fascinating historical facts interwoven. Narrator dreadful. If the story hadn't been so good, I would have bailed because of her. If narration had been good, book would have been fantastic.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Autumn in Oxford?

Encounters with historical figures like Bayard Rustin.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Breathy, phony English accent was truly gratingly bad. Speech pattern distracting.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Historical revelations were moving

Any additional comments?

Would have been a great physical read

12 hrs of a rushed hysterical whisper - whew!

Any additional comments?

Another audiobook that should have never been released. Audible should pull this dud. The Amazon reviews are good and it is a Kindle Unlimited, so I will give the read a try.

Nostalgic trip for old lefties.

Loved it. If you still argue about who killed Kirov you also will probably like it. I is essentially a thriller but with plentiful reminders of the bleakness of the twentieth century even before Vietnam.

Predictable, characters didn't move me.

struggled to finish it. I have to write at least 15 words. That's it.

If this were a physical book I would have thrown it in a corner, but

But, it turned into a great surprise! I thoroughly enjoyed the book once I picked it up again....I don’t mean to dwell on the beginning of the story, but I must, as I could have given it back and missed this rare read full of adventure and courage and characters well done!
So, if you can bare the first part of the book, and I pray you do,you are in for a treat.
Oh and by the way, the read got an extra vote because she often goes out of the room if she doesn’t care for a reader not up to her caliper!
