Publisher's Summary

Two hundred years ago, the path of human history took a frightening turn. But the event was carefully hidden from the world….until now.
Young Sarah was devastated following the loss of her mother. At just six years old, she was now alone and very confused. She had no idea that the young, newly assigned social worker on the other side of the glass would become the hero she needed. Neither of them did.
Christine Rose's smile through the window was a nervous one. It was her first case and no one knew yet just how special Sarah really was. But Christine was about to find out, including the terrible reason behind her mother's death.
The time had finally come. After being hidden for centuries, the world's most devastating secret was now being exposed. And with it, a chain reaction as far reaching as anyone could imagine.
But one individual could still change the outcome. From the halls of Washington D.C., to the Vatican, to the deserted Nazi bunkers of Argentina, Christine would ultimately be left with just one goal … keeping Sarah alive.
And what Christine doesn't yet know is she isn't the only one on Sarah's side.

Carrying the ability to suspend disbelief too far

This is my 4th Michael C Grumley novel. I liked his Breakthrough and Leap novels which include both ESP and verbal communication between humans and dolphins. Amid the Shadows goes beyond that to the point that the entire novel is based on the paranormal, specifically the supernatural. That is outside my area of knowledge and interest. I did listen to the entire novel and I found the plot mildly interesting. Had this been my first Grumley novel it would have been my last.

Just didn't care for the "God" stuff

Almost too many characters to follow easily especially in the beginning. was intrigued by the mystery but turned off a little by the religious / spiritual side of the story. spoiler alert: the world is going downhill because God is too busy. that's sort of sums it up for me.
