Publisher's Summary

On Christmas Day in 1893, every man, woman, and child in a remote gold-mining town disappeared, belongings forsaken, meals left to freeze in vacant cabins - and not a single bone was ever found.
One hundred sixteen years later, two backcountry guides are hired by a history professor and his journalist daughter to lead them to the abandoned mining town so they can learn what happened. Recently, a similar party had also attempted to explore the town and was never heard from again. Now the area is believed to be haunted. This crew is about to discover, 20 miles from civilization with a blizzard bearing down, that they are not alone, and the past is very much alive.

Meh

The best part of this story was the amazing, creative swearing attributed to the late 1800s. I wonder if the author created it or used references from period literature to make it authentic. Fun, in any case.

This is a 9-hour morality play whose message is that "Greed corrupts." I felt like the story went on too long. The protagonists made too many unrealistic choices, and just when the story should've been winding down, yet another layer of evil was revealed. By the end I was exhausted.

The performance, however, was excellent.

Good but not what I expected.

If this had been the first Crouch book I had read I think I would be singing praises. Do not get me wrong it has a great plot and interesting characters but I kept waiting for the supernatural or bizarre to happen. My bad. It is worth reading. Good mystery and a few plot twists.

Turned me into the walking dead for three days. Had to listen to it.

I don't know what I was expecting... Supernatural? Monsters? Not sure. What I got was two interwoven stories with well rounded characters and enough interest to fill three novels. No spoilers here , it's just exceptional. Atmospheric, immersive. Listen somewhere warm.

very good, but not his best

After Dark Matter, and the Wayward Pines Trilogy Blake has set the bar very high indeed. in my view this is a great story, complex, twisting, and interlinking well. but... it's still not his best work. but it's still very welcome in my collection. thanks Blake
