But the police seem determined to concentrate their efforts on proving Dr Kristian Beck the culprit - because he is foreign. Concerned and unhappy with this state of affairs, Lady Callandra Daviot of the Board of Governors asks Investigator William Monk to pursue the case...

A riveting yarn

I'm a fan of Anne Perry's books. She manages to bring 1800's London alive for me, and always tackles social issues of the day. In this book she takes on women's health, rape, child birth and abortion. And she does it as part of a ripping mystery that unfolds in a hospital and concludes in a court room. As usual there's plenty of tension between her two main characters, Monk and Hester. This book didn't disappoint me.
