Publisher's Summary

Sarah Jane Fearing, the sole offspring of a father who desperately wants a male heir, has grown up in the imposing rural mansion of one of England’s most influential banking families. At the centre of Sarah’s world stands her charming, generous uncle Frank, the only relative who seems to have escaped the straitjacket of ponderous respectability that so effectively stifles the Fearing family. Frank’s rebellions afford Sarah hope, until his extravagant lifestyle leads him deeper into debt and manoeuvres him into a disastrous marriage.
Frank’s wedding to a coldly ambitious woman produces the family’s longed-for male scion, but the parents fall to quarrels, and then to murder. And Sarah is drawn inexorably into a morass that threatens the survival of the entire family.

undramatic but beautifully read

Lovely narrator, but not much of a story. Very long lead -in ...only to end in a drawn- out anticlimax. As a novel, more of a whodunnit, yet as a mystery, by the time you get there you no longer care very much.

a disappointment.

Any additional comments?

after listening to the killings on jubilee terrace and really enjoying it (a 5 star book) I looked forward to listening to this one.
it was a disappointment. told in the first person all it seemed to centre on was she was convinced her uncle frank had been murdered and the fact covered up. it went on and on and on. it was only Julia franklin's performance of the story which kept me listening.
