Publisher's summary

You cannot bounce back from hardship. You can only move through it. There is a path through pain to wisdom, through suffering to strength, and through fear to courage if we have the virtue of resilience.

In 2012, Eric Greitens unexpectedly heard from a former SEAL comrade, a brother-in-arms he hadn’t seen in a decade. Zach Walker had been one of the toughest of the tough. But ever since he returned home from war to his young family in a small logging town, he’d been struggling. Without a sense of purpose, plagued by PTSD, and masking his pain with heavy drinking, he needed help. Zach and Eric started writing and talking nearly every day, as Eric set down his thoughts on what it takes to build resilience in our lives.

Eric s letters drawing on both his own experience and wisdom from ancient and modern thinkers are now gathered and edited into this timeless guidebook. Resilience explains how we can build purpose, confront pain, practice compassion, develop a vocation, find a mentor, create happiness, and much more. Eric s lessons are deep yet practical, and his advice leads to clear solutions.

We all face pain, difficulty, and doubt. But we also have the tools to take control of our lives. Resilience is an inspiring meditation for the warrior in each of us.

Great book, good stories and applicable content

Would you consider the audio edition of Resilience to be better than the print version?

No, I might consider a print version to be better as this is a book I can see wanting to reference again and again to ingrain some of the ideas I found most valuable. Also, not to be too nit-picky but at times the narrator's tone fluctuates like Barney from the Simpsons and made me laugh, distracting me from content.

What did you like best about this story?

I like the mix of stories be it about SEAL training and combat combined with the practical knowledge to take away and incorporate. Its a self-help book with cool stories.

Have you listened to any of Eric Greitens’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Nope.

content is great

author is a hypocrite as shown through his deeds since writing this book. his use of ancient philosophies to make point's relevant for today is well done. Listening to him in parts of the audio book waa a challenge for me because his actions do not match the words, thoughts, or ideals expressed in these letters.
If you can put aside the man from the words it's a well done production

Living wisdom with great historical perspective

I have already listened to this book twice and will do again. More than a road map for overcoming obstacles to gain a flourishing life. It's a great exploration and review of ancient philosophy that guides towards actionable integration for today's challenges. Plato and Homer become my neighbors with whom I can share my struggles and triumphs with.

Wisdom much in need in our society...

I have profound respect and appreciation for the warrior/philosopher balance. A veteran myself, I also invest much of my time thinking, reading about, and discussing these things. Resilience is a core trait for a life well-lived in service and Greitens is a brilliant choice as a guide along this path based on the life and legacy he has built. I look forward to future books by him. He has earned a place on my shelf next to Marcus Aurelius.

Greitens is on the list of strongly recommended authors for my own children as they transition to adulthood. I also recommend The Heart and the Fist by him.

Actually life changing for me

This book has helped me open up and live my life without the cowardice that had held me back. No one would describe me as faint hearted, however no one can see inside your head. This book helped me see and overcome the fears I didn’t know I had. Thank you Eric and Walker for sharing your correspondence.

Probably the best book I've ever read

If I were to only have one book for the rest of my life, it would be this one
This book is great for anyone, especially if you're going through a hard time in life. I wasn't going through a rough patch while reading it and much of the book still resonated with me

Excellent

Excellent wisdom and will have to go back and listen again. I love the fact that the author read his own work. I work with combat veterans and the message is inspirational and offers hope and healing.

WOW! Nuggets of Gold on each page.

This is a MUST READ if you have been to combat. It is also a must read if you have ever had adversity in your life.

I thoroughly enjoyed the book from start to finish. Easy to read, yet written in a way that gave me the feeling I was taking a master's class in philosophy. Great stories and easy to relate. I highly recommend this book as one to read, reread, highlight, dog-ear, and study. Enjoy!
