Editorial reviews

Storyteller Donald Davis shares charming stories from his North Carolina childhood in a special holiday season performance. Listeners who enjoy Davis' folksy, down-home style will love these tales from his boyhood, which include a recounting of a day at the fair, an explanation of how his mother overcame her lifelong aversion to cats, and a blow-by-blow account of his attempts to convince Santa to give him a red scooter for Christmas. Throughout the recording Davis imbues his stories with a love of place and family that is sure to warm listeners' hearts.

Publisher's summary

For 16 years, Donald Davis has performed during the Christmas season at Fearrington Village, a unique destination community near Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Hundreds of people fill the seats in this historic barn, now converted for use as an events venue.

Recorded live at Davis's December 15, 2007, performance, this audio captures the familiar and special relationship between a skilled and beloved storyteller and the audience that has sustained him year after year.

In three memorable stories, Davis revisits the vertigo occasioned by the rides at the county fair ("I had my head down between my legs with my fingers in my ears so my liver wouldn't squirt out through my brain"), recalls the days when corporal punishment was common ("most kids didn't need to worry about it, because every class had about three designated paddlees whose job in life was to get paddled for the whole class"), and puzzles over the Belks department-store Santa's inability to remember him ("I thought, if he can't remember my name, how's he going to remember what I want?") despite multiple visits.

Best ever afternoon this year

Was spent listening to Donald Davis. The first time I listened while folding laundry but after working on the same pair socks for over an hour, I found myself laughing so hard I was unable to even match a pair. Then I played it again - and again and now I need to play it again. I have found what I want to give out for Christmas. Thank you Donald Davis for reminding me how wonderful childhood is.

A Belly Laughing Good Time

Oh, my goodness! I made the mistake of listening to this in bed while my husband was trying to sleep, and I busted out laughing out loud with my earbuds in my ears . . . the corporal punishment story nearly had me in tears laughing . . . Now my husband is listening to it. He's a retired middle school principal :) so I believe he will get a good chuckle out of it, too. The rural flavor of Donald Davis' tales are heartwarming . . . and hilarious . . . i.e. the barn cat versus the city cat . . . I am hoping I can find many more of his recordings on Audible, because I do believe our grandkids need some education in "the way things used to be".
