Vocabulary Drills

This is a great buy if you have a good understanding of Japanese grammar, but need to add more words to your vocabulary. Before you buy this program, listen to the Audible audio sample - the entire program sounds like that. I don't mind the "no frills" approach, but I can see how it might drive some people batty. You can also see WHAT words you will learn by previewing the PDF file that comes with this program before you buy it.

Overall, the words you will learn are very useful. There are a few "duds" like floppy disk and magnetic tape, but most of the words are worth knowing. As you can see from the PDF file, the words are only written in romanji. So if you are a person who learns with kanji, then this might not be a good fit for you.

The one thing I wish Audible could have done with this book is make the chapter markers at more convenient places. The first half of the program has chapter markers at the beginning of new lessons, which is great, but the last part of the program has random chapter markers, so it's hard to get to a specific section. The content of the program is solid though and once again, I would recommend it to someone who is looking to add more words to their Japanese vocabulary.

Back to basics - this works!

I am an elementary-level learner of Japanese who is able to get by in basic everyday situations, like shopping or going to restaurants etc. What I lack is a broad vocabulary and this audio book is really helping me to build up a solid foundation in several useful areas. The narrators' voices are clear and gentle, unobtrusive music plays in the background. The music really adds to the pleasant atmosphere and I feel like I am having an old-school vocab practice with friends in a relaxing cafe; the music stops the 'Japanese word-English word' structure from feeling too 'dry' and repetitive. I am concentrating on one set of vocab each week or so. I listen several times a day and am amazed how quickly I start to remember most of the words! I wouldn't necessarily recommend this to a complete beginner as the vocab might not be relevant to your needs - but as soon as you have a few lessons under your belt, this would be suitable for all levels up to intermediate and above. I am really enjoying learning new words with this method and am slowly but surely increasing my vocabulary. The PDF-print-out is helpful for structuring and reviewing your learning. I get my friends to test me and it reminds me of learning French vocab for tests when I was at school. No gimmicks, requires self-discipline but is simple and effective!
