Publisher's summary

Collins Spanish with Paul Noble combines an exciting new, nontraditional approach to language learning with the easy, relaxed appeal of an audio-only product. No books. No rote memorisation. No chance of failure.

Paul Noble is a genius with a higher IQ than Einstein. Despite this, he still struggled with language learning at school. He found himself feeling 'confused, incapable and unable to really say anything'. As a result of his negative early experiences, Paul has come up with a groundbreaking new method of language teaching that removes the need for months of studying. With Paul Noble, everyone really can speak a language.

Part 3 of the course covers:

  • Vocabulary for conversing with a pharmacist or doctor
  • Practice and revision
  • Mexican and Castilian pronunciation
  • Future and past tense

Two native-speaking Spanish experts help Paul to deliver the course and to perfect your pronunciation in both Latin American and Iberian Spanish. No complicated grammatical explanations, no rote memorisation, no writing - no stress. Learn over 6,000 words in no time at all, and - most importantly - learn how to make your new vocabulary work for you. (Use the accompanying booklet as a reference and revision tool.)

Good method, limited vocabulary. Easy to use.

The overall teaching method is effective, however, the words taught are limited to the very basic one would need to travel to a country where Spanish is the native language.

Good points:

-The course covers both Latin American and Castilian dialects
-The narrator explains basic grammar rules, how to go from present tense to past tense, to future tense and plural.
-The narrator explains how to convert words from talking about me vs. you vs. more than one of you, vs. we.
-The narrator explains when there are differences in the two major dialects.
-The narrator and the native speakers are easy to understand and speak clearly.
-Word emphasis (which syllable gets emphasized and when) is explained.
-Limited explanation of feminine vs. masculine words.
-Inexpensive.

Not so good points:

-The vocabulary is very limited. Granted, you are told how to make up or guess at words, but things like fork, spoon, automobile/car, stop, and many other basic words are not explored.
-The program ends at version 3. The last observation wouldn't be an issue if there were more volumes to purchase.

Overall, the course was worth the money (because it is very inexpensive). I learned a fair amount and could carry on a basic conversation at a restaurant with the waitress, but the course left me wanting more. I ended up purchasing the Pimsleur courses as well. They overlap somewhat, but also give different pronunciations for some of the same words. And they expand the vocabulary past what is offered in this course.

Summary:

If you just want to learn just enough Spanish to get by and don't want to spend a lot of money this is the course for you. If you want to be fluent in conversational Spanish, spend more money and buy a more in-depth course.

Buyer beware!

Buyer beware! If you are looking for an advanced audio book for learning Spanish, this is NOT the book for you. I bought Collins Learn Spanish number 2 and number 3, thinking that they would have more advanced lessons than the first audio book. Unfortunately, I was very wrong. I wasted 2 credits on these books. "How would you say... a waste of money?" This audio book is about 20 percent "How would you say...." 70 percent a waste of time on repetition, and 10 percent useful. After 3 hours of audio, this book is still trying to teach you the personal pronouns tú, usted, ustedes, ellos, ellas, él, and ella. The entire final chapter is counting. That's an entire hour of counting - half in English! Really? I'd like 90 percent of my money back.

Excellent!

I appreciated the pace at which Paul worked, and the way he cleverly linked much of what I know already in English to what I did not know in Spanish. This increased not only my vocabulary but my confidence. I am traveling in Mexico now, and I'm amazed at how much I'm remembering. So much fun! Thank you Paul!

Great course before vacation to Mexico

Any additional comments?

This is a good course for someone planning a vacation in a Spanish speaking country. After completing the course I'm able to speak short phrases that will allow me to order food at a cafe , purchase goods, communicate with a doctor, and ask for basic directions and locations. I'm not remotely fluent in Spanish and I'm not able to follow conversations among spanish speaking people. If your goal is to become fluent in Spanish I recommend a more comprehensive course.
