Winterhouse by Ben Guterson is an enchanting urban fantasy middle-grade debut - the first audiobook in a trilogy - set in a magical hotel full of secrets.

Orphan Elizabeth Somers’s malevolent aunt and uncle ship her off to the ominous Winterhouse Hotel, owned by the peculiar Norbridge Falls. Upon arrival, Elizabeth quickly discovers that Winterhouse has many charms - most notably its massive library. It’s not long before she locates a magical book of puzzles that will unlock a mystery involving Norbridge and his sinister family.

But the deeper she delves into the hotel’s secrets, the more Elizabeth starts to realize that she is somehow connected to Winterhouse. As fate would have it, Elizabeth is the only person who can break the hotel’s curse and solve the mystery.

But will it be at the cost of losing the people she has come to care for, and even Winterhouse itself? Mystery, adventure, and beautiful writing combine in this exciting debut audiobook richly set in a hotel full of secrets.

12 year olds might like it - not for adults

I enjoy young adult and middle school books. But the author's voice came out all too often instead of the characters'.

If I had to listen to one more book the author had read or hear that annoying chain at the beginning of each chapter, I might have tossed my tablet across the room. As such, to protect my piece of equipment, I stopped listening.

The concept of the story was intriguing. Unfortunately, the follow through did not happen. Most of the characters were caricatures and the main heroine was like a blank - we might have seen a little of what was going on around her, but I never felt like I got to know her. She was but a window into a very odd world where she found ways to create puzzles.

Vastly disappointing.

not worth paying for

Narrator sounded congested. Nowhere near as well-written as I he Green Glass House books (it came to my attention by researching what someone who likes Green Glass House might like). Story seemed forced, characters inconsistent.

Excellent Listen!

I wasn't familiar with this book, but it was recommended to our family by a 12-year-old friend. She was really excited about it, and now I see why! On to the second book in the series!

Fun Listen for the winter Time!

The story and performance overall was enjoyable. Although I felt that the last couple of chapters were slightly drawn out the performance was light and an easy listen.

Great Story

It is a great, simple story with wonderful vocab and is easy to listen to. This would be a great story for a reluctant reader!

Winter house review

I liked the book and I have no regrets or anything bad to say about this book. I would recommend this book to anybody that shows interest in mystery and adventurous sort of books. I would suggest being 9 or older for this because even I (I’m ten) was just a little scared at the last part. But then again there’s the thing that I loved this book.

I love this book!!

It was very soothing to listen to. The characters are very detailed and the whole storyline was very good. I really liked all the details of the tastes, smells, and appearances of winter house.

Not a fan...

I'll be returning this. I'm unclear as to the message this author is trying to send. The narrator was great as I've listened to her before with other authors.

Surprisingly fun

This book exceeded our expectations. At first, it sounded like a Harry Potter knock-off, but soon established its own creativity and unique charm. The puzzles and mysteries woven through the novel were inventive, fun, and engaging. The whole family was enthralled.
