Publisher's Summary

The fourth book in Arthur Ransome's classic series for children, Winter Holiday takes intrepid explorers John, Susan, Titty, and Roger Walker, and fearsome Amazon pirates Nancy and Peggy Blackett to the North Pole. Joined by budding novelist Dorethes Callum and her scientist brother Dick, the children plan an "Arctic" expedition. But unforseen events seperate the travelers and disaster nearly strikes in the exciting climax of their race to the Pole.

Critic Reviews

"(This) story is the best kind of adventure story. . . Every step is possible, and everyone is transmuted into romance by deliberate purpose. Nothing that the children do is beyond the reach of a group provided that winter, a frozen lake and mumps connive to perfect adventure." (Observer)

Another great book by Arthur Ransome

Would you try another book from Arthur Ransome and/or Alison Larkin?

Yes, I plan to 'read' them all

Who was your favorite character and why?

Capt Flint as always is easy going and very tolerant/protective of all of the children.

Did Alison Larkin do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

Yes, but I was disappointed the the 'whispering' parts as the volume had to be increased to understand these parts.

Could you see Winter Holiday being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

Probably not. The whole attitude regarding children running free and not truly getting into trouble or worse just doesn't work today

Any additional comments?

I was skeptical at first as the other books have a nautical theme and this one was winter/ice/snow. Was good just the same.
