Publisher's summary

Fifth grade was the worst year of Marc's life. He stunk at gym class, math was too hard for him, the school lunch was horrible, and his class field trip was ruined because he couldn't swim. But what was the most awful thing about fifth grade? Kenny Williamson, the class bully, who called himself the "King of the Jungle".

When Marc's mother tells him that his uncle Jake is coming to stay for the whole summer, Marc can't wait. Uncle Jake is a for-real super-cool Navy SEAL. And Uncle Jake has a plan.

He's going to turn Marc into a warrior.

Becoming a warrior isn't easy. It means a lot of pull-ups, sit-ups, push-ups, squats, swimming, eating right, and studying harder than ever before! Can Marc transform himself into a warrior before school starts in the fall - and finally stand up to the King of the Jungle himself?

Thank you Jocko

Thank you Jocko, for everything. Also, my wife was 9 months pregnant and I gave her some white tea to drink. All of sudden her water broke, but instead of going to the hospital she just started doing burpees until she delivered a healthy strong boy, who then also started doing burpees.

REQUIRED READING

Where does Way of the Warrior Kid rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This one is at the top. Look, it's a "kid's book" in it's format, but it's also an excellent distillation of what Jocko (and Leif) put forth through their work: Echelon Front. Also, what Jocko is getting at so often with his podcast. If you have sons...scratch that...children, this should be required reading.

What other book might you compare Way of the Warrior Kid to and why?

Can't think of one

Which character – as performed by Thor Willink and Jocko Willink – was your favorite?

Mark all the way. Couldn't have been better or meant more to have Thor Willink read the part.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

I think it's Jocko's job to come up with that one.

Any additional comments?

Excellent, Excellent, Excellent. If you have children and anything remotely related to self-esteem, discipline, respect and responsibility are important to you, read this to your kids.

Not just a kid's book.

While I would recommend it for kids this 39 year old kid got a lot out of it as well. Inspiring and a tale a lot of us lived as kids.

The only downside of this book was the short length but totally worthwhile.

Misogyny Enforced.

I used a credit to purchase this because this was highly recommended by a podcast I enjoy, but now I need to question the metrics in which the podcaster defines beneficial. Oh my God is this awful. “A warrior kid doesn’t cry, he does something about it.” A male of the species is not allowed to have a feeling, and is supposed to fight his way out of conflict. I did not make it past Chapter 2; hoping this narrative would redeem itself. No such luck. The way Uncle Jake speaks to his 9 year old nephew, is borderline emotional abuse. Did the author experience Domestic Violence, which normalized the shame based approach Uncle Jake uses. This confirms not everyone should write a book.

Get both the book and Audio! Simply Awesome.

Would you consider the audio edition of Way of the Warrior Kid to be better than the print version?

I think it compliments the book every well. They are both solid investments for you and your kids.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Mark the little kid who was read by Jocko's son.

Which character – as performed by Thor Willink and Jocko Willink – was your favorite?

They are both good! Seriously. I thought it was hilarious when Jocko was talking as Marks Mom, I literally laughed out loud!

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Discipline Equals Freedom.

Any additional comments?

I will be passing this book out to all of my friends who have kids. This will be the first book I read to my kids. I think this book is more important than those Dr Seuss books. This book gives kids and adults alike a guideline and direction in life - something a lot of kids want but never have. Jocko - Thank you for writing this book. It was surprisingly entertaining, and the lessons that you learn from this book have me fired up. As a 26 year old, reading this book, I can tell you I have benefited from it. I want to become a Warrior Kid/Adult..and now I know how to do it now. This will change a lot of kids lives........the future is looking bright.

Excellent!

Not just for kids. This book is written such that the message is simple to learn and can be applied by anyone.

In the corporate world there was a time when writing a mission statement was king of everything, but marketing was behind this message and the message seemed insincere. This book allows anyone, or any team or business, write a code of ethics. This book gives examples of why those codes are important.

I will listen again.

Inspiring!!!

I love listening to Jocko Podcast, it's very inspiring and pushes me to be better. Now we have the perfect way to help instill the same principles in our children (sometimes it's better coming from someone else's mouth). They were very excited to listen to this during our trip and have learned a lot. Jocko and Thor are excellent narrators. Well worth it!
