Publisher's Summary

This acclaimed story of World War II is rich in suspense, characterization, plot, and spiritual truth. Every element of occupied Holland is united in a story of courage and hope: a hidden Jewish child, an underdiver, a downed RAF pilot, an imaginative, daring underground hero, and the small things of family life which surprisingly carry on in the midst of oppression. The Verhagen family, who live in the old windmill called the Winged Watchman, are a memorable set of individuals whose lives powerfully demonstrate the resilience of those who suffer but do not lose faith.

Thoughtful story w/ excellent narration

After having lived in the Netherlands for several years, I was delighted to enjoy this authentic book with my children. A thoughtful, moving story that will cause you to pause and think and rejoice without sappy manipulation so common in contemporary children's literature. Beautiful themes of compassion, duty, forgiveness. Excellently presented. First rate all around.

very enjoyable listen

My kids (5th and 8th grades) are learning about WWII and we listened to this story to supplement the history books. the story tells of a Dutch family during the war, and really brings to life the day to day issues faced by one family, who happens to run a windmill. We all enjoyed this well-told and well-read story and would definitely recommend it.
