Publisher's Summary

Supervillains do not merely play hooky.
True, coming back to school after a month spent fighting - and defeating - adult superheroes is a bit of a comedown for the Inscrutable Machine. When offered the chance to skip school in the most dramatic way possible, Penelope Akk can't resist. With the help of a giant spider and mysterious red goo, she builds a spaceship and flies to Jupiter.
Mutant goats. Secret human colonies. A war between three alien races with humanity as the prize. Robot overlords and evil plots.
Penny and her friends find all this and more on Jupiter's moons, but what they don't find are any heroes to save the day. Fortunately, they have an angry 11-year-old and a whole lot of mad science....

Step backwards for the story

Any additional comments?

I enjoyed the previous book. It was a story of children becoming teenagers and dealing with those kinds of things in a PG way. The awakening of their powers and puberty are clearly overlapping. I was expecting the gang to grow up more and develop some of the interesting characters that were introduced in book one. Instead we have cookie cutter new characters and forced sub-plots that build off of nothing from the previous book. It's like the whole cast was in a bubble. Almost no characters from the previous book are developed in this one. Even the main characters seem to freeze if not take a step back from their development.

On top of all the lack of character depth the story is incoherent. It jumps paragraph to paragraph with very little reason. purpose or transition. You will stop to go back 30 seconds to realize you missed nothing the story just abruptly changed for 'reasons'.

Given how much I enjoyed the first book, this is clearly a disappointing step backwards. I still give it a 3 out of 5. The narrator is excellent as well. I hope the next addition to this series improves.

What Happened!?!

What could Richard Roberts have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

What happened to this book? I loved the first one and so couldn't wait to pick up this second book. Instead of continuing with what was started in book one, our villains are thrown into outer space with a completely bran new cast of characters. Sadly, there were so many that I found myself getting confused by who was who and why I should bather investing time in them or not.

I felt that this story did not flow as well. Having to rewind the story several times to make sure I did miss a segment or miss hear another took me out of the story. One of the new main characters was so screechy that I felt like I had to plug my ears when she was on.

Overall, I would not recommend this book to anyone and I am not even sure I will attempt the third book. Maybe in a couple months this book will have faded from my memory, but mostly, I think I will not be continuing. Which is sad, as I really thought that this author had something with the first book.

Best book in the series

For me, this was the best book in the book series.

However, see why this may not be for other readers as it detaches from the normal books and moves us to aliens and outer- space, which I found exciting.

I thoroughly enjoyed the story and the narration by Emily was amazing.

Go read it :-)

excuse to go into space

not bad but I liked the first one better as that was more fun. this one started off like that but as soon as they blasted off into space it got a lot more serious.
