For generations, kids have feared being thrown into the oven by a cannibal witch because of this little story. More fodder for fear, the German fairy tale may have true-life roots in the Great Famine of the Middle Ages. Upbeat music sets the audio-story's folksy tone. Laura Paton's delightful voice is light and airy, complete with an easy British lilt. She animates the characters' voices distinctively and lovingly. The Brothers Grimm version has always been a little scary, but Paton makes it feel warm, too. Adults will enjoy the nostalgia while kids, lucky enough to hear Hansel and Gretel for the first time, will hang on every suspenseful word.
