Publisher's summary

When suburban Claudia Kincaid decides to run away, she knows she doesn't just want to run from somewhere; she wants to run to somewhere - to a place that is comfortable, beautiful, and preferably elegant. She chooses the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Knowing that her younger brother, Jamie, has money and thus can help her with the serious cash flow problem, she invites him along.

Once settled into the museum, Claudia and Jamie find themselves caught up in the mystery of an angel statue that the museum purchased at an auction for a bargain price of $250. The statue is possibly an early work of the Renaissance master Michelangelo, and therefore worth millions. Or is it? Claudia is determined to find out.

This quest leads Claudia to Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler, the remarkable old woman who sold the statue, and to some equally remarkable discoveries about herself.

Critic reviews

"After reading this book, I guarantee that you will never visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art (or any wonderful, old cavern of a museum) without sneaking into the bathrooms to look for Claudia and her brother Jamie....Such is the impact of timeless novels...they never leave us. E. L. Konigsburg won the 1967 Newbery Medal for this tale." (Amazon.com review)

One of my favorites!

I've loved this story since I was a child. It was delightful to share this Audible version with my daughter. I've always wanted to be Claudia, the heroine, and do what she did. We really enjoyed hearing the forward which was added by the author in 2002. It's at the end of the recording. Thanks for a great listen, Audible!

One of my favorite books of all time.

This story is sweet and funny and touching (but not corny) in all the right ways. It's smart and just biting enough to keep the attention of adults smart enough to appreciate it. Jill Clayburgh isn't its best feature, but my guess is that she was reading to kids and not to their mothers. All is forgiven. A first-rate YA book.

Very cute

Would you consider the audio edition of From the Mixed-up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler to be better than the print version?

Unsure

What did you like best about this story?

The strong relationship between its sibling main characters, and the narrative letters adding intrigue.

Have you listened to any of Jill Clayburgh’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No, but I think I know her as an actor.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I did not have an extreme reaction, it's not that kind of story. But it is fun and sweet.

I read this book when I was 11. I'm 51 now

I loved it then and decided to give it a listen some 40 years later. It is still one of my favorite books.

A classic to be shared!

This was my very favorite book as a child, growing up in the 70’s on Long Island, in a different suburb of New York City. I just finished listening to this with my 7year old, who loved this wonderful story as well. I am thrilled to have been able to share this with my son and experience it all over again.

a amazing story

This was the first audio book I read on my Amazon fire that I got for my 9th birthday this year and it is the best book ever. I am addicted to it. The narrator (Jill Clayburgh) is full of expression and is amazingly enthusiastic and entertaining and I can't believe how amazing of a writer E.L Konigsburg (the author) is to write this.
