Publisher's summary

A standout middle-grade adventure with a sassy, memorable heroine and a charming Southern feel, perfect for fans of Kate DiCamillo and Natalie Lloyd.

Twelve-year-old haunt huntress apprentice Evangeline Clement spends her days and nights studying the ways of folk magic, honing her monster-hunting skills while pursuing local bayou banshees and Johnny revenants.

With her animal familiar sure to make itself known any day now, the only thing left to do is prove to the council she has heart. Then she will finally be declared a true haunt huntress, worthy of following in the footsteps of her long line of female ancestors.

But when Evangeline and her grandmother are called to New Orleans to resolve an unusual case, she uncovers a secret that will shake her to the soles of her silver-tipped alligator-skin boots.

Set in the evocative Louisiana bayou and the vibrant streets of New Orleans, Evangeline of the Bayou is a tale of loyalty and determination, the powerful bonds of friendship and family, and the courage to trust your gut no matter how terrifying that might be.

As a self proclaimed swamp witch, I loved this book!

This was a beautiful, magical, adventurous story. I really enjoyed every bit. I recommend it to anyone looking to lose themselves in the magic of the bayou and New Orleans.

Family Trip To Nola

We let Evangeline's story introduce us to New Orleans and the Bayou while we drove there for a family trip. Everyone was captivated and looked forward to getting back in the car. It inspired confidence in our intuition and gave us common ground as we explored New Orleans.

Starts out ok, but spirals down

The story starts out alright promising a different setting and atmosphere. During the course of the story however, the protagonist becomes stubbornly opinionated. The two extremes a mystery can take are a know-it-all protagonist and on the other end the one who is avoiding to see- both equally annoying. This story is on the latter end to a degree of painfulness. The narrator isn't helping out falling more and more into a whining voice.

A fun family-friendly story

driving to Florida with two 10-year-olds in the car, I needed something that we could listen to and all of us enjoy. This worked out to be the best story for it. Evangeline is just a smidge older than my daughters, and trying to figure out who she is in a world of magic. when she and her grandmother have to go on a special case to save people from nefarious villains, this girl saves everybody, and finds herself in the process. I recommend this for children on their own, or if the adults have to listen along this works great.
