Publisher's summary

Best-selling author Rick Riordan introduces this adventure by Roshani Chokshi about 12-year-old Aru Shah, who has a tendency to stretch the truth in order to fit in at school.

While her classmates are jetting off to family vacations in exotic locales, she'll be spending her autumn break at home, in the Museum of Ancient Indian Art and Culture, waiting for her mom to return from her latest archeological trip. Is it any wonder that Aru makes up stories about being royalty, traveling to Paris, and having a chauffeur?

One day, three schoolmates show up at Aru's doorstep to catch her in a lie. They don't believe her claim that the museum's Lamp of Bharata is cursed, and they dare Aru to prove it. Just a quick light, Aru thinks. Then she can get herself out of this mess and never ever fib again.

But lighting the lamp has dire consequences. She unwittingly frees the Sleeper, an ancient demon whose duty it is to awaken the God of Destruction. Her classmates and beloved mother are frozen in time, and it's up to Aru to save them.

The only way to stop the demon is to find the reincarnations of the five legendary Pandava brothers, protagonists of the Hindu epic poem the Mahabharata, and journey through the Kingdom of Death. But how is one girl in Spider-Man pajamas supposed to do all that?

Aru Shah is clever

The main character feels very relatable and realistic. The supporting cast is engaging and charismatic. It's got good pacing and strong, positive messages. Definitely a story worth sharing with kids.

Indian mythology in a fun, new setting!

Narrator did great with the voices, but it seems that the rest of the narration lacked variety in expression and inflection. The story is fun and interesting!

Great adventure story for everyone in the family!

We bought this story for a family road trip. The kids did't want to stop and were looking for excuses to drive somewhere.

It is a little long, but never drags. There is plenty of intrigue, new characters, and action. Aside from just being a good story I found the introduction into Hindu mythology to be very interesting. And aside from benefits of a wonderful performance, knowing how to properly (I hope) pronounce the names and titles is an advantage to the audio version.

The kids keep asking for when the next book in the series will be available and I don't mind looking for it.

Aru Shah and the End of Time

This whole series is going on my favorite-books shelf! I loved the action-packed scenes, girl power, and the mythology that was weaves seamlessly into the series. The reader's voice isn't monotone or whiny, as some others are, and when she speaks as characters it's perfect.

It's just- *chefs kiss* Highly recommend. :]

It was ok

The plot was ok. It was a bit long. The narrator made her voice go up in surprise too much.

A wonderful book for strong girls

My girls loved Aru and all her adventures. They loved her personality (sassy) and her bravery. I would recommend this to anyone with daughters looking for vulnerable yet strong girl characters.
