Publisher's summary

When Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert of Green Gables, Prince Edward Island, send for a boy orphan to help them out at the farm, they are in no way prepared for the error that will change their lives. The mistake takes the shape of Anne Shirley, a redheaded 11-year-old girl who can talk anyone under the table. Fortunately, her sunny nature and quirky imagination quickly win over her reluctant foster parents. Anne's feisty spirit soon draws many friends - and much trouble - her way.

Montgomery wrote the novel in the twilight of the day, sitting at her window and overlooking the fields of Cavendish. Since publication, Anne of Green Gables has sold more than 50 million copies.

Wish I had discovered it sooner!

I wasn’t sure how much I would like Anne of Green Gables when I first started it. The most I knew about Anne was from the old, animated PBS TV series I watched when I was a kid. I liked that well enough, but it wasn’t necessarily a favorite show.

Well, with the book version, I can whole-heartedly say…I ADORED IT!!! Anne’s antics were so much fun, and I can’t help but love children with big personalities who chatter and have lots of “scope for imagination”, as Anne would put it. I also found it interesting that, instead of just staying with Anne as a child, the story showed Anne growing up into a beautiful young lady. But while she gradually became more mature, she never lost her spirit or likability, and I really appreciated that.

I truly have no complaints about this book. There was a sad part near the end, but I thought it was handled very well, and by the end of the book things are looking up again. The last lines of the story may be the best and most satisfying I’ve read in a long while.

I’m so glad there are more books in this series. I fully intend to keep reading and find out about Anne’s continuing adventures!

On the technical side of things, the narrator’s performance was excellent as well. I don’t recall having any complaints about it.

Still a favorite

I read these books as a girl and still love them as an adult. Mary Sarah did an amazing job as narrator.

I loved EVERY MINUTE

I read this story as a young girl and loved it so much. I have always identified with Anne. I wanted her free spirit and positive attitude. And now in my middle age I have an even deeper appreciation for the story. I cried more times than I have during any other book.

The person reading it did a fantastic job.

Perfect for any Anne fan!

Narrator is so so. I found her performance largely okay, but some strange mispronunciations and rather breathy voice for Anne's speech was jarring and somewhat irritating.
The story is a quaint experience full of yesterday's charm. Really nice especially for Avonlea fans. Some lovely turns of phrase and fleshes out the world of Anne.
