Publisher's summary

Introducing an extraordinary new voice - a magical debut that will make your skin tingle, your eyes glisten...and your heart sing.

Midnight Gulch used to be a magical place, a town where people could sing up thunderstorms and dance up sunflowers. But that was long ago, before a curse drove the magic away. Twelve-year-old Felicity knows all about things like that; her nomadic mother is cursed with a wandering heart.

But when she arrives in Midnight Gulch, Felicity thinks her luck's about to change. A "word collector", Felicity sees words everywhere - shining above strangers, tucked into church eaves, and tangled up her dog's floppy ears - but Midnight Gulch is the first place she's ever seen the word "home". And then there's Jonah, a mysterious, spiky-haired do-gooder who shimmers with words Felicity's never seen before, words that make Felicity's heart beat a little faster.

Felicity wants to stay in Midnight Gulch more than anything, but first, she'll need to figure out how to bring back the magic, breaking the spell that's been cast over the town...and her mother's broken heart.

LOVE TASTE AS SWEET AS COTTON CANDY

YOUR WORDS ARE PURE MAGIC
This is one of the books were the writer goes out of her way to be magically descriptive. To make her words tasty and sweet. It is about the words and not the story. A couple of times I thought a story was going to happen, but it took a back seat to words, words and more words.

THREADBARE
I was a military brat and I know that feeling of being a new kid. From kindergarten to fourth grade I went to a different school each year. I moved four times during my high school years. Like the main character it made me an introvert and very shy. I dreaded my first day at every school I ever went to. This could have been a story I could have gotten into. I like words, but when they help make the story, not when they take over the story.

PUMPERNICKEL
I think Lloyd missed the boat, by not making this a teen book. If she would have made the main character a high school student, there would have been a larger audience for the story. I find it hard to believe that young kids would stand for eight hours of syrupy sweet words. This was like Dr. Seuss on steroids.

BEETLE
I thought the narrator was great.

Poetic and magical

Any additional comments?

Loved that this was read with the voice of the child. It's a book of family, friendship, community and love artistically represented and fun to read. It's a great book for preteens, teens, adults ... a sweet and magical story for all ages.

Very enjoyable read

I really enjoyed this book. I wasn't sure in the beginning, but the further I went, the more I liked it. I was dying to get to the duel and I wasn't disappointed! I recommend this book.

A kid's book a parent can love.

The narrator was very authentic. Thank you for brining Felicity and Midnight Gulch alive.
