In this third installment, Logusz presents how British general Sir William Howe was to advance northward from New York City with a force of almost 20,000 regulars accompanied with a strong river naval force to link up with the two other commanders in Albany. Capturing Albany would not only deny the provincials a vital town on the edge of a wilderness, but also cut off the entire region of New England from the rest of the newly established nation. Instead, Howe decided to pursue Washington in Pennsylvania, leaving behind British general Sir Henry Clinton in New York City to deal with the city's lingering troubles and the events to the north.

The book vividly describes the hardships encountered by the patriots fighting for independence and their opponents, along with Clinton's experiences in and around New York City, West Point, and the Hudson Valley region. Logusz illustrates in depth the terrain, tactics, and terror of the multifaceted Wilderness War of 1777.

focudes work on lower Hudson 1777

This book is more detailed than most on the conflicts on the lower Hudson in 1777, rather than focusing on Burgoyne - which Logusz does in another volume. My chief regret is that Audible does include a PDF with maps to illustrate the area. However Logusz does make few mistakes, particularly in the chapters on blacks and women. They felt somewhat padded as Logusz wanders far afield from New York. And his statements that the blacks and women who served got pensions and could take army equipment home does not agree with anything else that I have read. The army was always underequipped, so only a few could have made off with supplies. Unless they were the contractors, of course. While officers did eventually get pensions, the everyday soldier was filling out pension applications in the 1820s and 1830s. Not a lot of veterans survived that long. There are books that compile some of these pension applications made at that time period. But I doubt that blacks and women were any more discriminated against than poor white male.
But I am carping too much. I enjoyed this book, particularly the recounting of Clinton's venture up the Hudson and the taking of Forts Montgomery and Clinton.

Historical Book not Not Boring

Well written book that moves the reader along. Gives excellent insight into the time period. I was surprised by the number of women, blacks and immigrants that were involved in this military campaign.
