Publisher's Summary

The Knights Templar were the wealthiest, most powerful - and most secretive - of the military orders that flourished in the crusading era. Their story - encompassing as it does the greatest international conflict of the Middle Ages, a network of international finance, a swift rise in wealth and influence followed by a bloody and humiliating fall - has left a comet's tail of mystery that continues to fascinate and inspire historians, novelists and conspiracy theorists.
Unabridged edition read by Dan Jones.

Critic Reviews

"A pacy narrative history of the medieval order laced with tales of blood and bravery." ( The Sunday Times)
"This is a fascinating story of fanaticism...Jones is certainly an entertainer, but also a fine historian who knows how to render serious scholarship into accessible prose. Seldom does one find serious history that is so easy to read." ( The Times)
"Snappy, well-paced…. The author’s ambition, he says, is to tell the story of the Templars in a straightforward way and 'to write a book that will entertain as well as inform'. He has done precisely that." ( The Daily Telegraph)

Absolutely marvellous!

Dan Jones has narrated this enthralling history of the Templars, I thoroughly enjoyed the narrative and strained to stop listening...He has proven that the historical fact of the Templars is much more interesting than the fictional histories and conspiracies of recent times. I cannot recommend it highly enough!

A missed opportunity

I like Dan Jones and am interested the Templars but I found this unengaging and a bit dull. While there are a few moments when it does come alive, Dan Jones - despite being a TV persona - does not sit well as an audio narrator and I think the decision to narrate himself rather than use a professional narrator was a mistake. He is softly spoken and almost meek-sounding at times and the book needed more of a 'performance' to bring it to life, from someone with a bit more charisma in their voice. In addition the style in which he's written the book is a bit dull for my tastes. It comes across as a chronological list of anecdotes he's gleaned from the sources, rather than a proper story or narrative. While it's all factually sound he doesn't do enough to make it interesting, fill in the gaps or weave the pieces together, and he really fails to make any of the characters, relationships or battles come to life in the way that really good history does. Other historians of the period, like Marc Morris and John Julius Norwich, do a much better job of this and I would have liked to see them deal with this subject matter. Despite the dramatic times the Templars lived through, the deeds they did, and their horrible demise, this book therefore makes the subject come across as rather boring and I had hoped for more.

Factually riveting

A factual historical account telling the story of the Templars warts and all. Brilliant account.
