Publisher's Summary

Renowned Israeli historian Ilan Pappe's groundbreaking book revisits the formation of the State of Israel. Between 1947 and 1949, over 400 Palestinian villages were deliberately destroyed, civilians were massacred, and around a million men, women, and children were expelled from their homes at gunpoint.
Denied for almost six decades, had it happened today it could only have been called "ethnic cleansing." Decisively debunking the myth that the Palestinian population left of their own accord in the course of this war, Ilan Pappe offers impressive archival evidence to demonstrate that, from its very inception, a central plank in Israel's founding ideology was the forcible removal of the indigenous population. This is an indispensable book for anyone interested in the current crisis in the Middle East.

Very pertinent history

Ilan pappe is a great historian and writer. He gives a lot of information that others have not written about in full.

Zionism soon after the Nais

Words can barely express the despair experienced reading this chronology of Israeli barbarism, and their continued oppression of the Palestinian people which began soon after the second world war. A history which has been suppressed by the mainstream media within the UK, whom, instead, favour portraying the Palestinians as equally to blame for their plight in the worlds largest open air prison. I am ashamed to discover how complicit my government was in the atrocities committed by the Israeli's across 1947-1949 especially given we had a duty to protect them. Pappe focuses primarily upon the aforementioned period, and he provides a meticulous account of the shocking atrocities committed in the name of Zionism in village after village whilst the world turned a blind eye. I have come away from this read believing in boycotting everything Israeli until Palestine is returned to the Palestinians. If I were a politician I would have absolutely no reservations standing by this conviction in public. In-fact, I would actively promote boycott and divestment where Israel is concerned. Shame on Israel.
