Publisher's summary

Joshua Chamberlain of Maine forged a remarkable career during the Civil War. An academic and theologian by training, this modest young professor left Bowdoin College to accept a commission as lieutenant colonel of the 20th Maine. He fought at Antietam and Fredericksburg, then led his regiment to glory at Gettysburg, where he ordered the brilliant charge that saved Little Round Top. Promoted to brigade command, Chamberlain won a battlefield promotion to brigadier general from Ulysses S. Grant for his distinguished conduct in the assaults against Petersburg. He was held in such high esteem by his superior officers that Grant accorded him the honor of receiving the formal Confederate surrender at Appomattox. There, Chamberlain endeared himself to succeeding generations with his unforgettable salute to Robert E. Lee's defeated army.

Outstanding Biography

This excellent biography of Chamberlain stands as a fitting tribute to a remarkable man and hero. Though more may remain to be said of him, the general restraint of the tone, while not slighting his character and accomplishments is very fitting to the man, scholar, and commander.

What a great historical biography about a National Hero!

Chamberlain’s first hand accounts of his life experiences before, during and after the American Civil War are riveting and give a glimpse into the savage brutality of those darkest days of America. His ability to overcome personal hardships in a most dignified and honorable fashion is amazing.

Great Read

Chamberlin was a great man who also stood on the right side of history. This book not only details his life and moral virtue but also paints the battlefields and battles of the Civil War in such a poetry grace that I find myself melancholy that this excellent account of the life of the Hero of Little Roundtop had to end.

Very Enjoyable

This was a different perspective of some of battles of the Civil War and the years following. I had not considered how the armies we're disbanded and the possible problems directly after Lincoln's death. The book was we written and enjoyable to listen too. I learned a lot.
