I only wish this book were longer... Luckily there are two more volumes.
This ingenious author has put together the important and fascinating bits of history, both legendary and scholarly, that make up England's glorious past. Even when the story is exaggerated, the author explains what the story can teach us about English history. It is incredibly well-done! Anyone with a passing interest in early English history will devour this gem of a book!
Furthermore, I believe the author has a back-up calling if he gets tired of writing... Robert Lacey is a FANTASTIC narrator. Rarely can an author do justice to his own work as a narrator. Lacey is an audible super star!!
I can't recommend this book enough!

This book is an easy listen - it takes you through tales from the early part of England's history. A few commonly believed myths are dispelled, and while this is no weighty historical tome I think most people will find some things to delight them and learn about in here. It is well narrated and if you are looking for a breezy canter through the period then this will do just fine. I certainly enjoyed it and have bought some of the others in the series, so a thumbs up from me.
