Publisher's summary

Discover the stories of 12 women who heard the call to settle the West and who came from all points of the globe to begin their journeys.

As a slave Clara watched helplessly as her husband and children were sold, only to be reunited with her youngest daughter as a free woman six decades later.

As a young girl, Charlotte hid her gender to escape a life of poverty and became the greatest stagecoach driver who ever lived.

As a Native American, Gertrude fought to give her people a voice and to educate leaders about the ways and importance of America's native people.

These are gripping miniature dramas of good-hearted women, selfless providers, courageous immigrants and migrants, and women with skills too innumerable to list. Many were crusaders for social justice and women's rights. All endured hardships, overcame obstacles, broke barriers, and changed the world. The author ties the stories of these pioneer women to the experiences of women today with the hope that they will be inspired to live boldly and bravely and to fill their own lives with vision, faith, and fortitude. To live with grit.

only ok

I am not interested in the authors attempt to teach lessons on racism. Just tell the stories, your opinions are unnecessary.
The reader should just read and NOT try to do voices that she thinks the person sounded like, so phony and irritating. That works for fiction, not true stories.

enjoyable and relevant

I enjoy true stories about people's lives. These did not disappoint! I like how the author discussed each at the end of the chapters. The narration was also very well done.

Great stories

I enjoyed this book so much, and felt each chapter brought to life important women. I found this book very inspiring.

Miss Aligned Dates

Thought this was historical, but story stated one of the subjects traveled from San Francisco to Washington DC via the Panama Canal - to see Lincoln during the Civil War. We’re some other misses too so quit listening.

An agenda book

The stories are interesting, but it’s another book where the author has to put in her feminist agenda.

waste of time

The author is very politically motivated. I wasted my time on this book. I would have rather watched paint dry.

Too many opinions

I loved the stories of incredible women of the West. However after every story, the author added preachy conclusions about how we could apply what we learned to our own lives. I think it would have been a much better book to let the reader come to their own conclusions!

So very obviously a white author

I liked learning about some amazing women I did not know about before, but this book is so ethnocentrically white. It’s not explicitly racist, but it’s so white. I am white and have only recently developed am ability to even notice this. At all. I certainly do not have a full appreciation of these issues, but this particular writing stands out.

Disappointing

These frontier women’s stories are just amazing, but it’s just not worth listening to the overly preachy bits after each story.
