Editorial reviews

The French Revolution was a pivotal and controversial moment in Western history, and in this comprehensive guide, University of Huddersfield academic Peter Davies puts the time into context and embellishes his portrayal with helpful analysis. Martin Blum's clear and precise narration elevates the material, which follows the French Revolution and its aftermath in chronological order. Including references to both primary documents and secondary analysis, this audiobook is an enjoyable examination of the Revolution beginning from the old regime, to the bloody, decade-long struggle, and lasting legacy.

Publisher's summary

Blending narrative with analysis, Peter Davies explores a time of obscene opulence, mass starvation, and ground-breaking ideals, when the streets of Paris ran red with blood, and the numbers requiring execution precipitated the invention of the guillotine. Davies brings the subject up to date by considering the legacy of the revolution and how it continues to resonate in today’s France.

Great Intro to French Revolution

My only knowledge of the French Revolution before this book was A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens and festivities celebrating Bastille Day. This book gave a good overview of themes, issues, major characters, and various historic points of view of the French Revolution. I recommend the book for anyone wanting to get started with learning more about the French Revolution. I was surprised that the author even provided insight into how ownership over the legacy of the French Revolution crops up in 21st century French politics. The book introduces you to characters, events, and movements that spur your interest. I also like that it mentions specific historians so that you can confidently move on to other books to further expand your knowledge, if that interests you.
