Publisher's summary

A living legend, “Wildman” Steve Brill leads us on a lively and entertaining tour through the Northeastern United States as he shares tips on foraging in densely populated areas like New York’s Central Park and rural areas throughout New England. We follow the seasons: wild ramps in the spring, the first mushrooms of summer, and in autumn, wild edible berries in Central Park—more than you’ll find at your local supermarket!—plus roots and nuts you can keep all winter long.

Steve provides the historical background of these plants and their various uses by American Indians and early settlers, plus their current medicinal and culinary uses today. The Wildman will teach the home cook at any level how to use these foraged foods in everyday meals, whether sprinkled on a salad or baked into a delicious dessert. And perhaps most importantly, you’ll never pay $7.99 for cherries again once you learn to locate them in the wild to pick yourself. Steve Brill has lead thousands of tours and offers tips on how to include the entire family on a foraging tour of your own so you can teach your children about conservation and the environs around them.

For anyone who has a curiosity about the outdoors or a fondness for food, this original audio makes an ideal companion.

Good Stuff

Loved this guys origin story and this reminded me there's so much more edible stuff out there than just mushrooms as good as they are. Thank you for the inspiration 🙏

might have been good info, never know

the asinine humor was so painful I couldn't get through an hour. I really want to know this information. I really felt like this book would benefit my life but the author / interviewee ruined it and I don't think I could spend 5 minutes in the same room with him. awful. thumbs down. door shut.

Funny to listen while gardening.

As I was pulling weeds I often wondered, is this edible, what about this? I do have several of the "weeds" that Steve mentioned in my yard and some in abundance. I guess I'll have to try them. Maybe even grow them instead of other vegetables especially since they just grow without much need for anything from me.

One thing that would have been nice was a PDF that illustrates and/or listed the plants he was describing in his story.
Yes I know there is an app, that was made very clear.

Meh

Repeated itself a lot. Sometimes difficult to understand the narrator as the book is largely recordings from his foraging tours. Not particularly useful unless you know very little about perennials and tree foods.

Great Listen for Us Nature Lovers

Having grown up on the Nolin River in rural Kentucky, drinking Sassafras Tea and walking the woods with my daddy as a kid, this listen was right up my alley. I was very familiar with many, although not all of the specimens that Steve Brill discusses. I loved the narration by Susan Boyce (but I was expecting her to talk about Joe Grey and Dulcie at any minute :) as I also love her in all the Joe Grey Mysteries). The origins of the many plants that the author has discovered was interesting to me, including medicinal uses, cooking and where to find them. Can't go wrong with this listen!

*humor included

I like the personal stories and added humor of the author. I didn’t think the book was organized very well. I think this book is good for those looking to begin foraging.

it would be great

To start, the narrating of the woman sounds really good. The jokes were fined at the guy told on his tours. However, he would get a little political. And winning to the left of everything. I didn't come to books to hear political statements. I come to books to get knowledge of what I'm trying to learn. This book would also be very helpful if it had APDF. Or some form of photos to help us. OK, it's very informative. But again, a being on a tour and hearing the other people talk was very annoying. Though, it did make you feel as though you were there.
I would also like to say I really would update this book more stars. However, I feel as though keep your political beliefs out of books. People do not need your opinion. As much as they're trying to learn something.
