Publisher's summary

There's something in the house on Kenwood Drive, and it only comes out at night...

College students Eric and Lydia are looking for a novel way to spend Halloween. They decide to put together a documentary about the supernatural and take a camcorder into the long-abandoned house on Kenwood Drive. It's said that a vengeful spirit lives there, and Lydia thinks it the perfect location.

Eric, though, has his reservations. Having grown up in the area, he's familiar with the stories of the spirit they call the "Upside-Down Man", and as their trip to the house draws near, his fear begins to mount. According to the rumors, once you go into the house, you bring the Upside-Down Man out with you. And in three days' time, you disappear.

When the two of them begin to see and experience strange things, they launch into a frenzied search for truth, attempting to separate the myth of Kenwood House from the reality. But it turns out that untangling the threads of local legend is more difficult than it appears.

Especially when you've only got three days.

The Ring light

The story wasn't bad but it felt familiar and cliche. I liked the idea of the upside down man but he really was really just a different urban legend monster in the same setting as all the others.

Joe Hempel did a great job narrating and definitely added to the story.

Starts off exciting then it barely simmers

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Not really. The narrator kept it interesting, but the characters and plot was less than mediocre.

Has Whispering Corridors turned you off from other books in this genre?

I don't think it's turned me off from this genre, but I doubt I would select another audiobook or ebook from this author.

What about Joe Hempel’s performance did you like?

Joe's narration kept me interested to listen, although I lost interest in the story.

Do you think Whispering Corridors needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

No. i think it needs to be re-written. At no point near the end did it loop back to complete how the book started. Too many phrases and stories were repeated, making it dull and boring.

The Upside Down Man

Spooky, creepy, horrific! We have all lived in a town where there is "that house", the one at the end of the road, abandoned & creepy as hell.

When Lydia decides to make a movie about Kenwood House, her friend Eric reluctantly accompanies her. That decision forever changes their lives.

If you love creepy ghost stories, you will love this one! Well-written, it grabs you & doesn't let go. The great narration adds to the atmosphere of a ghost story.

I was gifted an Audible version of this book & chose to review it.

A better boogie man

I really loved the story! So much so that I listened to it all in one sitting. The reason I gave a 4 instead of a 5 is that I didn't feel it wrapped up the ending as well as it could've. I have a love/hate relationship with cliff hangers. But I really hope there will be a second book. I loved that the name given to the mysterious entity in the book, "Upside Down Man". I loved how the author took the idea of "what if an urban legend turned out to be completely real". A very freighting thought. I'm glad that the author created its own character with its own mythos. Kept it fresh and new. What a fun spooky adventure that was!

Ghosts, Goths and Good Fun!

Any additional comments?

Ambrose Ibsen and Joe Hempel are two of my very favorites and they definitely don't disappoint with Whispering Corridors! This book is a classic ghost tale about some well meaning college kids who make poor choices and get hooked up with a demonic spirit. Ibsen always does a fantastic job of spinning a unique and spooky story and the 'Upside-Down Man' ranks up there with the best of the creeps. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a fun ghost story! 10/10

Fairly creepy with annoying lead characters

You know the setup: there's a creepy house, you go into it, you awaken something, now you deal with the consequences.

I think the author handled this one fairly well, though I did feel it dragged a bit in the beginning as he was laying out backstory to build suspense. Personally, I think he could have skipped that and jumped right into them going into the house. The house's backstory gets repeated several times throughout the book anyway.

That brings me to my biggest let down with this one however: the characters. There's 2 main characters here: the protagonist and his female friend who is the reason they go into the house. Perhaps it's the narrator's reading, but the protagonist comes across as wimpy and whiney. He lets the female lead push and prod him and just tucks his tail and follows along behind her. The female lead is also annoying as she's written as selfish, bullying and obtuse.

While the protagonist spends a lot of time angsting over various aspects of his predicament, precious story time that could be devoted to actual creepy/scary encounters (of which there are a few) is wasted.

3.5-3.75 stars overall due to the actual "meat" of the story. Cut out the fat and it'd be 4-4.5 easy.

Whispering Corridors

Any additional comments?

Decent story overall. There were so many times I wanted to slap the main character upside the head. As usual, the narrator did an excellent job. I received this audiobook for free through Audiobook Boom for my unbiased review.
