Great Writer. Great Story.

This was quite an historical learning experience besides being an intriguing storyline. Loved the characters and learning what life was like in Africa in the late 1800's.

Anti-hero, anti-climax & very, very long

Although I think the story a fair picture of times as they stood back then, I still resented the author's choice to make the main character an ivory hunter. It's fiction. He could have given the character a conscience and limited the kill or distributed the meat.

The narrator was able to keep all characters straight and differentiated, which I appreciate immensely, but there's something about the South African accent which doesn't sit well with me so I found the overall pitch rather unsettling.

I won't be continuing with the rest of the series.
