He lurks in the untouchable recesses of the black web.
He's watching you. Right now.
When watching is no longer enough, he comes calling.

Chicago homicide detective Tom Mankowski (The List, Haunted House) is no stranger to homicidal maniacs. But this one is the worst he's ever chased, with an agenda that will make even the most die-hard horror listeners turn on all their lights and switch off all Internet, Wi-Fi, computers, and electronic devices.

Somebody's Watching Me

This is the second book I have read in as many weeks, which show the horrors that can be done with modern Technology. As in Endurance, Afraid and Trapped the horror is extreme, but unlike these books, we get a good look at the characters in this one. In parts this is a police procedural and the characters are fleshed out much better than any other Konrath I have read. I particularly liked the main character who is a detective with a bad credit rating. His girlfriend is not real understanding of the time he must spend at his job, and they have decisions to make about their relationship and their careers.

There are actually some deep thoughtful situations discussed, including Intersex. Konrath also gets a little political about drugs and law enforcement.

Like most books by Konrath, this is full of sex. This one is especially brutal, including the mutilation of male and female genitals. I found some of this hard to stomach and it may be too much for some readers.

I really liked the narrator.

The Narration Made an Average Story Worse.

Huh? What's wrong with the narration, you say?

If you listened to the sample, you'd say, "He reads with passion.Scene sounds exciting. What's the problem with the narration?". Well, the problem is he reads the entire book this way...WAY over the top....The entire book...all 8 and one half hours...

Kinda like listening to loud heavy metal for 8 1/2 hours, when a truly excellent horror/thriller should read like a symphony... soft violins, then, Bam!...timpani rolll into frenetic strings/horns...then gentle woodwinds, etc... Toooooooo much intensity.

If that wasn't bad enough, much of the story dialog is "spoken" through text message or chat room typing, so the narrator chose to speak in stilted, "typed" speach, rather than conversational tone...sounding more like Stephen Hawking, robotic speach.

Between the intensity and the bad phrasing, I could barely get through this story. The story, itself, was only average. You don't really care about the characters, whom were all very cliché.

If Audible chose a better narrator, this would still only bump this up to a 3 star read, for me.

This was the only book I've read by this author, so maybe I'm missing something (character development in other books?). This book does not work well as a stand alone, if that's the case. There are better thrillers out there for your credit/money.
