Publisher's Summary

Following the death of her husband and unborn child, Charley Belington sells the family home and bravely starts life over again. On moving into a new flat, she is befriended by her landlady, Ella, who seems like the perfect friend and confidante. But, unbeknown to Charley, Ella is fighting her own dark and dirty demons as the fallout from a horrific childhood sends her spiralling down into madness - and unspeakable obsessions. As Ella’s mind splinters, her increasingly bizarre attentions make Charley uneasy. But with every step Charley tries to take to distance herself, Ella moves in a tightening lockstep with her, closer and closer and closer... From the best-selling author of Taunting the Dead comes a raw, intense, relentless, and darkly claustrophobic psychological thriller that grabs you by the back of the neck and never lets you go.

So-so Mystery & Suspense

This book wasn't what I thought it was going to be at all. There's a lot of adult themes and content, so beware around young kids or other inappropriate audiences (parents, coworkers, etc). It held my interest okay, but I didn't think a lot of the graphic content was necessary, and it wasn't as suspenseful as I hoped it would be. It seems like it ran out of steam at the end. In any case, it's a quick read/listen.

Decent story, but the narrator perplexed me.

I thought the story was interesting and brought out many emotions in me....I was disturbed, appalled, sad, felt empathy, anger, etc. However, the narrator has the strangest kinda creeped me out. She sounds wicked, angry and evil pretty much the entire time. Kind of sinister and demented actually; even when out of character and in narration mode. All of the characters sound the same and at times it was confusing for me to discern which character was speaking during a back and forth conversation! I strongly feel I could've appreciated this book more with a different narrator.

Absolutely awful!!

A non story, unsympathetic characters, awful narration. Even as a captive audience on a very long journey, switched this off and listened to the radio. The narrator pronounces v and f as b. Incredibly annoying. Lots of pointless sexual encounters with all of the eroticism of cold toast. Avoid like the plague!!

Almost painful to listen to

We say that if there is an erotic scene within the first 15 minutes in a movie, and it lasts 5 minutes or more, the movie is bound to be bad.
In this book there is about 3 hours of it and quite unneccesary. I caught on to the character fine withoutall the details.
On top of that the narrator is terrible. She can't say f, it turns into b, so I bind myselb listening bor the b-words all the time. A speaking disability won't neccesarily spoil a good audiobook, but when the story is bad on top, well.... I looked her up and saw she had received several award nominations. Maybe she had a cold while reading this book.
The story could be okay, but in my opinion the author gets the main characters all wrong. While I do believe far too many children have been abused, and I do believe some women just have something about them to make easy targets, I can't believe Ella has been abused by every male she ever met in her childhood.
I kept listening because I had bought the audiobook, and also because irritation soon turned into laughter, it was so unbelievable.
