The house was built in the Old Queen's time: built for an Elizabethan pirate who was knighted for the plunder he brought home. It survived many eras, many reigns: it saw the passing of Cromwell and the Civil War. It became rich with an Indian Nabob and poor with a 20th century innkeeper. It saw wars, and lovers, and death. Children were born there, both heirs and bastards. It had ghosts and legends and a history that grew stranger with every generation.

A vibrant segment of the Cornwall series
As predictable as the story could be, the skips & pivots of these imperfect characters will guarantee that I'll continue reading on. The scenery is also so well detailed, that I wish it were a true landscape to plan my own journey there some day.

Great story, narration a bit stilted
I wish the narrator was a bit slower in parts for dramatic effect. More like a drama reading and less like a straight book reading. I’m spoiled by the voices in the tv series! Seems like the narrator’s voice changed ⅔ of the way through.

OMG didn't see that coming or did I
This book is a must read.
This makes the entire series more fascinating and makes you feel torn between Ross and Demelza. Elisabeth and George. You will feel contempt and compassion where you would not.
