Publisher's summary

National Book Award winner and New York Times best-selling author Sherman Alexie infuses his writing with biting wit and poignant insight.

As a 41-year-old man confronts his own mortality in this collection's title story, he recalls his Spokane Indian father's chilling death from alcoholism and diabetes. Another tale features an eccentric salesman pursuing a married woman from airport to airport. And then there's the film editor who sees nothing wrong with altering footage to fit preconceived views - until he becomes the target of media distortion.

Incredible talent

Sherman Alexie really has something that hits home with me - even though we've never met I feel like I know him. I guess part of it is that he writes about my world - where I grew up and where I've lived throughout my adult years - small town Eastern Washington - the reservation, Spokane, Seattle......

Local preference aside, he is truly an amazing talent and has the ability to create characters that are so real and complete. His narration is fantastic - I'd love to hear him narrate the works of other authors. This is a group of short stories - each one a little world within itself that will transport you into the mind of the men he portrays so expertly.

I'm laughing out loud in traffic. Alexie rocks!

How great is it to have the author narrate his own work? His style is superb, but to hear it come from his own voice was spectacular. I have read most of his works, and this one is a perfect blend of powerful subject matter mixed with humor.

Too random for me

An interesting mix of stories and styles, poems, and narration deliveries.

The narration didn't really work for me. I usually prefer author, or awesome non author narration. Often Mr. Alexie performed up to that level that only the author can be expected to reach. At times, either because of his delivery or someone's production choices, it is tough to keep track of what is going on: Is this a new story? A poem in the middle a story? What?

I would recommend this work be read. If you enjoy the written work, which you probably will, and want to enjoy the work again later, then this audio version narrated by the author would likely be an excellent choice.

Excellent story telling, both subject and narration

I have read several of Sherman Alexie's books now, half by audio book. I think i may have first heard about his work after seeing the movie Smoke Signals--still a favorite of mine. Even in his full length stories he tells his stories in vignettes, chapters or woven together short stories. I liked this short story collection, each as mesmerizing as the one before. Cannot beat Sherman's voice either.

War Dances: Short stories by Sherman Alexie

Author and narrator Alexie does not disappoint with these stories. Some are sad, some quirky, and many are funny. Alexie can slip into a "rez" accent when the story requires it, and is a superb and witty storyteller. Highly recommended.

Quirky Tales

I enjoy Mr. Alexie’s style of writing; quirky, poetic and metaphorical. Sometimes I catch myself laughing out loud at certain character descriptions or witty observations. Plus intriguing glimpses of life as a Native American make their appearance. Also, his narration really makes the stories come to life.

Heartbreaking and Hilarious

Perhaps some of the humor in this vook is best appreciated by someone who has lived on a res. Perhaps the grief and fear and underlying self doubt is, too. But these things are universal in their way, and I believe anyone could find themselves in some part of these stories, told in the beautiful and rhythmic language of Alexie's style.

Loves "Breaking and Entering"

First story was fabulous and "The Senator's son" was okay. Otherwise, nothing to write home about.
