Publisher's summary

Saloon keepers, street preachers, gypsies, steel-walking Mohawks, a bearded lady, and a 93-year-old "seafoodetarian" who believes his specialized diet will keep him alive for another two decades are among the people that Joseph Mitchell immortalized in his reportage for the New Yorker and in four books - McSorley's Wonderful Saloon, Old Mr. Flood, The Bottom of the Harbor, and Joe Gould's Secret - that are still renowned for their respectful observation, their graveyard humor, and their offhand perfection of style.

These masterpieces (along with several previously uncollected stories) are available in one volume, which presents an indelible collective portrait of an unsuspected New York and its odder citizens - as depicted by one of the great writers of this or any other time.

Super extraordinary and unforgettable

Books like this will never, ever come again. Profoundly absorbing accounts of New York and its people during the 1930s-1960s, a period of extraordinary eventfulness and change. This is one to listen to again and again.

Listening for the second time!

I just love this book for so many reasons. The narrator is perfect. The book is so well written ~ Please listen to it....all 28 hours of it, and if like me, you just want to listen to it all yet again, do it!

Very interesting and funny.

Well worth using a credit on this one. It makes an excellent repeat listen. Mitchell had a true talent for describing the setting.

Beautiful descriptive writing

In a clear-flowing style Michell describes colorful people and places. I don’t think they write like this in The New Yorker any more. It’s a charming look into the past.

An all time great

An endlessly fascinating look at the quirks and personalities of the past. I love reading about this era in America and this is a gem. Didn’t want it to end.
